This paper is addressed to the question: Why do women allow themselves to be confined to domestic roles with less social power than men? The question is investigated with data from Nepal. It was found that membership in caste, occupation, and education serve as powerful determinants of sexism. (Author)

One hundred eleven subjects were asked to indicate how much relationship with people is involved in 48 occupational titles. The results support Roe's classification of occupations: differences within occupational fields were found to be smaller than differences between occupational fields (F=8.53, p less than .01). Holland's hexagonal model for six occupational groups was tested with data on estimated occupational rewards. Data on rated occupational reward characteristics were available for 148 occupations.
