Peer reviewedKennedy, Keith – Journal of Chemical Education, 1979
Questions are analyzed from various ACS-NSTA High School Chemistry Tests. Results show more than 50 percent of test questions deal with only six concepts and 70 percent evaluate aspects of only nine concepts. Results may be useful to teachers of college preparatory chemistry regarding subject matter and math operations. (Author/SA)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Bound Students, College Preparation, Educational Research
Peer reviewedGeorge, Rani; Kaplan, David – Science Education, 1998
Proposes a model of parent and teacher influences on the science attitudes of eighth-grade students using data from the base year survey of the National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS: 88). Utilizes structural equation modeling methodology for analysis of categorical data. Contains 61 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Grade 8, Junior High Schools, Middle Schools, Models
Peer reviewedJensen, Murray S. – Advances in Physiology Education, 1996
Describes how a cooperative learning environment can be created in the anatomy and physiology laboratory through the use of cooperative quizzes. Includes a brief introduction to the pedagogical theory behind cooperative learning and an evaluation of the effectiveness of quizzes compared with more traditional methods. (Author/PVD)
Descriptors: Anatomy, Biological Sciences, Case Studies, Cooperative Learning
Peer reviewedBeichner, Robert J. – American Journal of Physics, 1994
Describes the development and analysis of the Test of Understanding Graphs in Kinematics (TUG-K) and reports the results of a study aimed at uncovering student problems with interpreting kinematics graphs. Proposes a model for creating multiple choice tests which can be used as diagnostic tools. Contains 34 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Formative Evaluation, Graphs, Higher Education, Measures (Individuals)
Peer reviewedBrown, C. R. – Journal of Biological Education, 1990
Discussed are problems revealed in student responses to a practical task which formed part of an advanced level examination. The frequencies with which some misconceptions about cell reproduction and genetics occurred are presented. The nature of these misconceptions is analyzed and their implications discussed. (CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Biology, Cognitive Structures, Genetics
Peer reviewedKoulaidis, Vasilios; Ogborn, Jon – International Journal of Science Education, 1988
Discusses the use of systematic networks as a basis for the construction of a questionnaire on teachers' views of the philosophy of science. Describes issues of the scientific method, criteria of demarcation, patterns of scientific change, and the status of scientific knowledge from four philosophical positions. (Author/YP)
Descriptors: Attitude Measures, Networks, Philosophy, Questionnaires
Peer reviewedCamacho, Moises; Good, Ron – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Describes the problem-solving behaviors of experts and novices engaged in solving seven chemical equilibrium problems. Lists 27 behavioral tendencies of successful and unsuccessful problem solvers. Discusses several implications for a problem solving theory, think-aloud techniques, adequacy of the chemistry domain, and chemistry instruction.…
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Problem Sets, Problem Solving
Peer reviewedScott, W. E. – Physics Teacher, 1989
Presents a mechanics problem illustrating that Newton's second law and the linear conservation of momentum principle must be used in an inertial reference frame. Provides an analysis of the problem. (YP)
Descriptors: College Science, Mechanics (Physics), Physics, Science Instruction
Peer reviewedTreagust, David F.; Smith, Clifton L. – School Science and Mathematics, 1989
Examined are tenth-grade Western Australian students' conceptual knowledge of gravity and the motion of the planets. Students were interviewed with seven cards, and a four-item diagnostic test based on the interview data on the first four cards was developed. A total of 113 students' responses to the test are summarized. (YP)
Descriptors: Astronomy, Cognitive Structures, Foreign Countries, Grade 10
Peer reviewedAndersen, Hans O. – Hoosier Science Teacher, 1988
Discussed is the preparation of a lesson plan. The lesson objectives, prerequisite concepts, materials and preparation, lesson, and quizzes are described. The evaluation criteria of the lesson plan is suggested. Provided is an example of lesson plan on guard cells. (YP)
Descriptors: Lesson Observation Criteria, Lesson Plans, Planning, Prerequisites
Peer reviewedZoller, Uri; Ben-Chaim, David – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1989
Surveys the trait anxiety profile and preference concerning types of examinations of preservice science teachers. Reports that the students prefer examinations on understanding and analyzing rather than on knowing and remembering, and that students' anxiety states correlate with the type of examination and sex. (Author)
Descriptors: Achievement Tests, College Science, Preservice Teacher Education, Science Education
Peer reviewedEisenkraft, Arthur; And Others – Physics Teacher, 1989
Presents a collection of suggestions, ideas, and reminiscences relating the first-day classroom activities of 13 different teachers at high schools and colleges. (YP)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Physics, Science Activities
