Peer reviewedElshout, Jan; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
It has been shown that the degree of restriction of range taken into account in testing the hypothesis that rho equals zero, entails risks of incorrect inferences. It is argued that an alternative is to disregard the restriction of range and to use the common t-statistics proposed by regression theory. (Author/JKS)

Peer reviewedButz, William P.; Ward, Michael P. – American Economic Review, 1979
This model emphasizes the distinction between male and female earnings and the distinction between families with employed wives and those without as they affect the fertility rate. (Author/IRT)

Peer reviewedMcDonald, Roderick P. – Psychometrika, 1976
The monotone regression function of Kruskal and the rank image of Guttman and Lingoes are fitted to bivariate normal samples and their statistical properties contrasted. Tables of results are presented. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Goodness of Fit, Multidimensional Scaling, Multiple Regression Analysis, Nonparametric Statistics
Peer reviewedPetrocelli, John V. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 2003
A brief content analysis was conducted on the use of hierarchical regression in counseling research published in the "Journal of Counseling Psychology" and the "Journal of Counseling & Development" during the years 1997-2001. Common problems are cited and possible remedies are described. (Contains 43 references and 3 tables.) (Author)

Algina, James; Olejnik, Stephen – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 2003
Tables for selecting sample size in correlation studies are presented. Some of the tables allow selection of sample size so that r (or r[squared], depending on the statistic the researcher plans to interpret) will be within a target interval around the population parameter with probability 0.95. The intervals are [plus or minus] 0.05, [plus or…

Curran, Patrick J. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 2003
A core assumption of the standard multiple regression model is independence of residuals, the violation of which results in biased standard errors and test statistics. The structural equation model (SEM) generalizes the regression model in several key ways, but the SEM also assumes independence of residuals. The multilevel model (MLM) was…

Strattman, Kathy; Hodson, Barbara Williams – Child Language Teaching and Therapy, 2005
Performances on tasks of phonemic manipulation, working memory, rapid naming, multisyllable word naming, receptive vocabulary and nonverbal intelligence were compared with decoding and spelling scores for 75 beginning readers. Multiple regression analysis revealed that phonemic manipulation accounted for the greatest amount of variance for both…

Turner, Lori W.; Wallace, Lorraine Silver; Perry, Blake Allen; Bleeker, Jeanne – American Journal of Health Behavior, 2004
Objective: To investigate the risk factors for osteoporosis among a sample of middle-aged women. Methods: Adipose tissue and bone mineral density levels at the left femur, lumbar spine, and total body were assessed using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Subjects (n=342) were surveyed regarding a variety of osteoporosis-related risk factors.…

Bardi, Massimo – Journal on Educational Psychology, 2009
People living in Southern Appalachia have been burdened by lack of resources, economic disparity, gender issues, and an increased probability to develop chronic disease linked to stress and anxiety. These problems can severely affect the individual's evaluation of the quality of life. In this study we assessed several predictors of life…

Golden, Thomas Courtenay – ProQuest LLC, 2009
The college choice requires the adolescent to gather and synthesize vast amounts of information, reconcile sometimes competing personal and familial goals, and manage a range of emotions. This decision process represents a major developmental crisis with which the adolescent must cope. Scholars have noted that psychological strain and heightened…

Daly, Laura A.; Perez, Linda M. – Early Childhood Research & Practice, 2009
This article examines the play behavior of 70 preschool children and its relationship to television violence and regulatory status. Linear regression analysis showed that violent program content and poor self-regulation were independently and significantly associated with overall and physical aggression. Advanced maternal age and child age and…

Daly, Alan J. – Educational Administration Quarterly, 2009
Purpose: The No Child Left Behind Act laudably brings social justice and equity issues to the forefront; however, the act's threat- and sanction-driven methods are not only increasing stress levels but potentially causing a rigid response, especially in the growing population of schools labeled "program improvement" (PI). Specifically,…

Gudjonsson, Gisli H.; Sigurdsson, Jon Fridrik; Eyjolfsdottir, Gudrun Agusta; Smari, Jakob; Young, Susan – Journal of Attention Disorders, 2009
Objective: To ascertain whether ADHD symptoms, and associated problems, are negatively related to subjective well-being. Method: The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) was completed by 369 university students, along with the Reasoning & Rehabilitation (R&R) ADHD Training Evaluation (RATE), the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of…

McKinney, Kathleen – International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, 2008
My focus in this exploratory study is on factors related to success in the sociology major. One hundred, fourteen graduating majors from a mid-sized, public university completed a self-administered questionnaire.
