Stimpson, David Vern – J Soc Psychol, 1970
The results of this study suggest that people with a great deal of self-esteem and commitment to specific goals are not amenable to accepting the suggestions of others that relate to a change in their behavior. (CK)

Clinch, Jennifer J.; Keselman, H. J. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1982
The analysis of variance, Welch, and Brown and Forsyth tests for mean equality were compared using Monte Carlo methods. The tests' rates of Type I error and power were examined when populations were nonnormal, variances were heterogeneous, and group sizes were unequal. Recommendations for use are presented. (Author/JKS)

Lee, Sik-Yum; Tsui, Kwok-Leung – Psychometrika, 1982
The work of Joreskog and Sorbom in comparing factor structures of several populations is extended to a more general analysis of covariance structures. Also, more complex constraints on parameters are allowed in this work. (JKS)

Burden, Paul R. – College Student Journal, 1983
Discusses the use of hypothesis testing research and hypothesis generating research designs. Researchers investigating teacher development should continue to use hypothesis generating research designs to depict, relate, and conceptualize information in this area. Hypothesis testing research designs could check the accuracy of these initial…

Fischer, Gerhard H. – Psychometrika, 1983
Two linearly constrained models based on the Rasch model are discussed. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of unique conditional maximum likelihood estimators are derived. Methods for hypothesis testing within this framework are proposed. (Author/JKS)

Wilson, Gale A.; Martin, Samuel A. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
Either Bartlett's chi-square test of sphericity or Steiger's chi-square test can be used to test the significance of a correlation matrix to determine the appropriateness of factor analysis. They were evaluated using computer-generated correlation matrices. Steiger's test is recommended due to its increased power and computational simplicity.…

Becker, William E., Jr. – Journal of Economic Education, 1983
Second in a three-part series, this article provides suggestions for the development of theoretical models in which issues and questions in economic education can be conceptualized and formally stated as empirically testable hypotheses. (Author/RM)

Brainerd, Charles J. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1982
According to the stage-learning hypothesis, children's ability to learn is constrained by their pretraining stages of cognitive development. Some procedures for obtaining unconfounded tests of this hypothesis are developed in this paper, and some applications to factorial experiments are considered. (Author/BW)

Sackett, Paul R. – Personnel Psychology, 1982
Recent findings suggest individuals seek evidence to confirm initial hypotheses about other people, and that seeking confirmatory evidence makes it likely that a hypothesis will be confirmed. Examined the generalizability of these findings to the employment interview. Consistent use of confirmatory hypothesis testing strategies was not found.…

Maney, A. C.; Kedem, Benjamin – Evaluation Review, 1982
A novel solution to the statistical problems in an evaluation of rare events is described. The significance of variations in the number of child homicides is analyzed in a binary time series of "active" months for monitoring future incidence and related systemic events. (Author/CM)

Leitner, Dennis W. – Multiple Linear Regression Viewpoints, 1979
This paper relates common statistics from contingency table analysis to the more familiar R squared terminology in order to better understand the strength of the relation implied. The method of coding contingency tables was shown, as well as how R squared related to phi, V, and chi squared. (Author/CTM)
