Peer reviewedGuttentag, Robert E. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1985
Three experiments tested for developmental changes in attention to auditory and visual signals. Results showed that adults and seven-year-olds tended to allocate their attention to vision rather than audition when no precue was provided. While not entirely consistent, results with four-year-olds suggested a similar biasing of attention to vision.…

Peer reviewedBauer, Richard H.; Emhert, John – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1984
A total of 11 reading-disabled and 11 nondisabled children ages 13 and 14 were presented a list of 10 words at different rates. Immediately after the last word of each list, subjects recalled the words in any order. Results focused on the use of elaborative encoding. (Author/CI)

Caouette, Michel; Reid, Greg – Education and Training of the Mentally Retarded, 1985
While all six severely retarded adults increased their work output over the 35 18-minute sesions, it was concluded that the reinforcement contingencies were influential in only four Ss. It was speculated that auditory stimulation may be a more potent motivator than visual stimulation. (Author/CL)

Problems of Validity in Connection with the Concept of Auditory Discrimination between Speech Sounds
Peer reviewedSkjelfjord, Vebjorn J. – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1975
An attempt was made to show that the connection repeatedly found between reading scores and scores on tests for auditive discrimination between speech sounds in children with no articulatory defects, results from the fact that the tests really measure a special skill in phonemic segmentation, a skill which is promoted by the instruction in…

Peer reviewedPackwood, William T. – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1974
A persuasion scale assessing counselor conviction and client agreement was used to rate 900 counselor statements. The 24 highest rated and 15 lowest rated persuasive statements were fed into a graphic level recorder. Differences in the graphs of high- and low- persuasive statements indicated that loudness is a characteristic of persuasion. (Author)
