Mendelson, Morton J.; Ferland, Mark B. – Child Development, 1982
Twenty-seven 4-month-old infants heard a repetitive auditory rhythm, then viewed silent film of puppet opening/closing its mouth, either in the familiar rhythm or a novel rhythm. Results showed infants exposed to the novel condition watched the film longer than infants shown the familiar condition, providing evidence for auditory-visual transfer…

Mencke, Eugene O.; And Others – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1983
Judges who were either experienced or inexperienced in listening to deaf speakers were asked to recognize speech sounds in word contexts presented in two modes: auditory only and auditory-visual. The experienced and inexperienced listener groups performed similarly. (Author/SEW)

Fey, Marc E.; Gandour, Jack – Journal of Child Language, 1982
Discusses spontaneous conversational situation in which a child recognizes the difference between his/her output and the adult model and his/her ensuing struggle in arriving at a new phonological rule to correct his/her utterances. (EKN)

Wagner, Sheldon; And Others – Child Development, 1981
Eight sets of paired auditory and visual stimuli were constructed. Each member of the auditory pair was matched by one member of the visual pair (e.g., ascending "tone/up arrow"; descending "tone/down arrow"). Sixty-one infants with a mean age of 11.4 months were presented matching and unmatching stimuli; total fixation time…

Fuller, Peter W.; And Others – Child Development, 1981
Determines whether an averaged evoked potential technique using a random-v-repetitive presentation mode could be used to study infant auditory discrimination. Results showed a main effect of presentation mode with shorter latency for random v repetitive. The shortest onset latency was for random stimulus at the fast rate. (Author/DB)

Hayes, Donald S.; Chemelski, Bruce E. – Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1980
Assessed 32 preschoolers' coding processes under aural and visual input modalities. It was found that preschoolers' free recall was affected by semantic rather than phonetic similarity, regardless of input modality. (Author/RH)

Lawson, Katharine Rieke; Turkewitz, Gerald – Child Development, 1980
Newborn infants' fixation of a graduated series of visual stimuli significantly differed in the absence and presence of white-noise bursts. Relative to the no-sound condition, sound resulted in the infants' tendency to look more at the low-intensity visual stimulus and less at the high- intensity visual stimulus. (Author/DB)

Strelow, E. R.; Boys, J. T. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1979
The Canterbury Child's Aid, a binaural sensory aid for research with blind children, is described along with the rationale for its design features. (Author)
Descriptors: Auditory Stimuli, Blindness, Research Reviews (Publications), Sensory Aids
Levin, Joel R.; And Others – AV Communication Review, 1976
In the studies reported here, repetition of an orally presented story did help first grade children remember the information, but pictures were even more effective in facilitating recall of information. (Author)

McQueen, James – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1996
Notes that in phonetic categorization, listeners hear a range of speech sounds forming a continuum of ambiguous sounds between two endpoints and are required to identify the sounds as one or other of the endpoints. Points out that this task has been used in phonetics and in psycholinguistics to study categorical perception, selective adaptation,…

Irausquin, Rosemarie S.; de Gelder, Beatrice – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1997
Compared immediate ordered memory for words in poor readers and normal readers. Items (manipulated in word length and phonological similarity) were presented either auditorily or visually. Results suggested that phonological coding and rehearsal occur to the same extent in poor and normal readers with both presentations, but absolute performance…

Jeong, Wooseob; Gluck, Myke – Proceedings of the ASIST Annual Meeting, 2002
Explores the possibility of multimodal bivariate thematic maps by utilizing auditory and haptic (sense of touch) displays. Measured completion time of tasks and the recall (retention) rate in two experiments, and findings confirmed the possibility of using auditory and haptic displays in geographic information systems (GIS).
