Gettinger, Maribeth; Lyon, Mark A. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1983
Based on Carroll's model of school learning, this study sought to identify factors to help explain the discrepancy between time needed for learning and time actually spent in learning. Ninety-six boys were required to read and reread a passage until 100 percent accuracy was achieved on a criterion test. (Author/PN)

Brooks, Penelope H.; Baumeister, Alfred A. – Peabody Journal of Education, 1983
Problems with experimental research on mental retardation include: (1) difficulties with defining mental retardation; (2) neglect in demonstrating causal relationships; and (3) reliance on methodology not necessarily appropriate for defining the criteria of retardation. The author advocates abandoning definitions based on intelligence tests and…

Lam, Y. L. J. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1982
Presents analysis of the relative impacts of course content and cognitive and affective factors on behavior of adult learners, based on research at Brandon University, Manitoba. Research involved testing of a systems model to determine relationships and interactions between certain specified variables and learner behavior. (EAO)

Gow, Lyn; Ward, James – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1982
Using the Matching Familiar Figures Test and the Porteus Maze Tests with characteristic modifications, the feasibility of using measures of cognitive tempo were examined. The measures' contributions in predicting the work performance of institutionalized moderately-severely retarded subjects were no greater than conventional individual…

Hunt, Earl – Intelligence, 1982
Three developments over the past 15 years--our understanding of cognition, new techniques in technical psychometrics, and the computer explosion--form the basis for a proposal for new intelligence tests. These developments are reviewed, and both leaps and steps in intellectual assessment are proposed. (Author/RD)

McCauley, Donald E., Jr.; Colberg, Magda – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1983
A theory and test of cross-cultural transportability of measurement were constructed on a logico-mathematical basis regarding the deductive measures and on a basis of syntactic reduction and Latin-based vocabulary regarding the linguistic measuring medium. A pilot study was administered in Spain, France, and the United States. (Author/PN)

Narrol, Harvey; And Others – Journal of Educational Research, 1982
The effectiveness of Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment program (FIE) in improving the cognitive performance of slow learners was tested for one year with low performing vocational high school students in Ontario (Canada). Improved cognitive performance was noted for FIE students, although changes in personality and attitude were substantiated…

Arlin, Patricia Kennedy – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1982
A paper-and-pencil test of seven of Inhelder and Piaget's formal operational schemes was developed. Multitrait-multimethod cross-validation procedures indicated that the objective test is a valid and reliable measure. It has the advantage of use in a large group setting without the need for trained clinical interviewers. (Author/PN)

Hilliard, Asa G., III – Journal of Negro Education, 1983
The effects of language in education are rarely accounted for in (1) measurement of intelligence; (2) diagnosis of language, speech, or learning pathology; (3) reading ability measurement; and (4) educator attitudes toward language variations. Educational malpractice in these areas may have negative effects on identity development among…

Walker, Thomas J. – Journal of Vocational Education Research, 1982
This article describes a procedure for developing and validating a criterion-referenced assessment instrument that will facilitate formative or diagnostic assessment of the concomitant theory and principles (cognitions) that underlie appropriate performance in a performance-based teacher education program. (Author)

Lindberg, Marc A. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1982
The retention of the conditioned response was tested in a retroactive interference paradigm. Results suggested that what is learned by children in simple conditioning paradigms is different than what is learned by adults in the same paradigms. (Author/PN)

Plymale, Sallie H.; Jarrell, Betty Joan – Community College Review, 1981
Presents the background, methods, and findings of a study contrasting the levels of cognitive development of community college and university students. Reveals that 48% of both student groups tested were incapable of performing at the formal-operational level (as described in Piaget's Cognitive Development Model). Discusses implications for…

Dean, Raymond S.; Garabedian, A. Alexander – Journal of School Psychology, 1981
Investigated personality dimensions concomitant with learner's cognitive rigidity. Results indicated the personality dimensions of tenseness, compulsivity, group dependency, absent-mindedness, sensitivity, and emotional stability explained 36 percent of the variability in subjects' increasing levels of cognitive rigidity. Showed a pervasive use of…

Backman, Jarl – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1980
Three experiments (which used adults and 14-year-old children) studied the congruence between textual input at encoding and output in the form of memory reproductions. Results verified a very close correspondence between encoding and retrieval regarding hierarchically structural operations on the information in simple stories. (AN)

Egan, Dennis E. – Intelligence, 1979
The information-processing approach and results of research on spatial ability are analyzed. Performance consists of a sequence of distinct mental operations that seem general across subjects, and can be individually measured. New interpretations for some classical concepts in psychological testing and procedures for abilities are suggested.…
