The effect of child maltreatment on children's social-cognitive development was examined by investigating abused, neglected, and nonmaltreated children's judgments regarding the permissibility of social-conventional and moral transgressions pertaining to physical harm, psychological distress, and the unfair distribution of resources. Examined cognitive learning styles and levels of moral judgment in 781 urban college students, who completed the Grasha-Riechmann Student Learning Style Scale or the Defining Issues Test. A study of 77 sixth-graders indicated that sociomoral reasoning correlated with both socialized and unsocialized aggressive behaviors, but not with attention problems, anxiety-withdrawal, or motor tension without aggression. Examined role of age and education in adult moral reasoning. Interviewed 195 adults between ages of 19 and 82 using standard Kohlberg moral dilemmas.
