Funkhouser, Charles – School Science and Mathematics, 1995
Case studies investigating the effectiveness of procedures undertaken to develop number sense and basic computational skills in (n=12) learning disabled students in a K-1 classroom found that all students were successful in recognizing and matching the numbers 0 through 5 and adding sums to 5. Dowker, Ann – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1992
Described are the strategies of 44 academic mathematicians on a set of computational estimation problems involving elementary multiplication and division. Discussion centers on the theoretical implications evident from pretest/posttest results in terms of the variety of strategies used and how the choice of strategy changed across the two tests.…

Miller, April D.; Heward, William L. – Intervention in School and Clinic, 1992
This article offers guidelines for using timed drills to achieve computational fluency in elementary students. It considers the acquisition and practice stages of learning, setting fluency aims and objectives, measuring fluency, research supporting time trials, how to do time trials, and 11 specific guidelines for conducting time trials. Muth, K. Denise – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1992
To determine how middle school students cope with the demands of arithmetic word problems, 140 eighth graders (67 males and 73 females) had to solve problems modeled after those of the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Extraneous information and extra steps reduce the accuracy of students' word problem solutions. (SLD)

Branch, Walter B.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1995
Twenty children with left or right hemisphere dysfunction and 10 controls were administered a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation. Results provide limited support for the hypothesis that the right hemisphere subserves attention and concentration but not for the hypothesis that right-hemisphere deficits are more frequently associated with…

Quine, W. V. – Mathematics Magazine, 1990
Presented is a proof where special attention is accorded to rigor and detail in proving the lemma that relates ruler-and-compass constructions to arithmetical operations. The idea that some angles cannot be trisected by a ruler and compass is proved using three different cases. (KR)

Taylor, Lyn, Ed.; Thompson, Virginia, Comp. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1992
Postulated here is the notion that the exploration of number patterns with calculators is a valuable mathematical learning activity that should be commenced in the primary grades. Various activities are presented that make use of the constant function key, which is available on many of the inexpensive four-function calculators. (JJK)

Wilson, David; Lavelle, Susu – Journal of Computing in Childhood Education, 1992
Compared the effects of LOGO Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI), and a standard curriculum without computer exposure among grade three Zimbabwean children. No significant differences were found between the groups exposed to LOGO and to CAI, but both achieved significantly greater gains that the groups without computer exposure. Results suggest that…

Simner, Marvin L.; Barnes, Michael J. – Journal of School Psychology, 1991
Reviewed academic records for students who attended public school, completing secondary education between 1982 and 1986. Students who experienced most difficulty in mastering first grade reading and arithmetic had much higher probability of leaving high school without graduating and of experiencing serious academic problems while in high school…

Couch, Jene P. – Teaching Pre K-8, 1994
Discusses the use and construction of "fact fans," fun and easy-to-make manipulatives that provide elementary school students with the opportunity to explore mathematics operations being studied in the classroom and to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. (BB)

Fazio, Barbara B. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 1999
A five-year follow-up of arithmetic calculation abilities of 10 low-income fourth graders with specific language impairment (SLI) involved comparisons with typically developing same age peers and with typically developing younger subjects. Results support evidence that children with SLI have difficulty with rote memory and document the…

Saenz-Ludlow, Adalira; Walgamuth, Catherine – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1998
Analyzes the interpretations of equality and the equal symbol of third grade children who participated in a year-long, whole-class socio-constructivist teaching experiment. Concludes that children expanded their conceptualizations of equality due to an active role in class discussions and the arithmetical tasks that took into account children's…

Morin, Victoria A.; Miller, Susan Peterson – Education and Treatment of Children, 1998
This study evaluated the effectiveness of teaching multiplication facts and related word problems using the concrete-representational-abstract teaching sequence and strategy instruction to three middle school students with mental retardation. Evaluation of the 21 scripted lessons given each student found only four occurrences (out of 63 lessons)…
