Lohr, Linda L.; Ku, Heng-Yu – Quarterly Review of Distance Education, 2003
Describes the process of design and development of two Web-based training templates (i.e., a newspaper metaphor and a theater metaphor) to prompt rapid development of active learning environments. Findings suggest that design elements to support limitations of short-term memory are important considerations in template design. (MES)

Alexander, Kristen Weede; Goodman, Gail S.; Scharf, Jennifer M.; Edelstein, Robin S.; Quas, Jodi A.; Shaver, Phillip R. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2002
This study interviewed 51 children, ages 3 to 7, about an inoculation after an approximate 2-week delay. Responses indicated a relationship between parents' attachment avoidance and children's distress during the inoculation. Parental attachment anxiety and the interaction between parental avoidance and children's stress predicted children's…

Gara, Michael A.; And Others – Child Abuse & Neglect: The International Journal, 1996
A study compared 55 mothers who had been physically abused as children and 46 mothers who had not been, concerning their memories and descriptions of self, parents, babies, and significant others. Mothers who were abused had negative attributes pervading their memories and perceptions. A mother's positive view of self was associated with secure…

Dukette, Dianne; Stiles, Joan – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1996
Examines the development of young children's analysis of spatial patterns--specifically, hierarchical letter and geometric forms. Suggests that although children as young as four years of age demonstrated substantial analytic competence, their ability to integrate the parts of the spatial array to form a coherent whole was weaker and more easily…

Daneman, Meredyth; And Others – Volta Review, 1995
This study found that three measures of working memory capacity (processing and storage capacity, reading and listening span, and visual shape span) were good predictors of reading achievement in 30 orally educated children (ages 5 to 14) with hearing impairments as well as in an age-matched hearing control group. Degree of hearing loss did not…

Miranda, Jose P., Jr.; Valencia, Richard R. – Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, 1997
Uses "word length" (syllable count) and "spoken duration" to examine cross-language equivalence of tests measuring short-term memory. Although the English and Spanish versions of the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test had considerably different word length, the performance of bilingual college students did not differ between…

Widom, Cathy Spatz; Shepard, Robin L. – Psychological Assessment, 1996
Using data from a study with a prospective-cohorts design, accuracy of adult recollection was assessed for 1,574 young adults for whom information from the past 20 years was available. Results indicate good discriminant validity and predictive efficiency of the two self-report measures used. (SLD)

van Manen, Max – Education Canada, 2002
This discussion of phenomenological research methods examines the importance of secrets in children's development of self-identity, autonomy, independence, and maturity; the experience of recognition in children and its relationship to teaching, learning, and child development; and Alzheimer's dementia and the relationship between memory and sense…

Stocklmayer, Susan; Gilbert, John K. – International Journal of Science Education, 2002
Interviews visitors at the Australian National Science and Technology Center. Reports that when using an exhibit, visitors experience a reminder of a similar experience that forms the basis for interpreting the exhibit. Proposes a model for "personal awareness of science and technology" (PAST) which is used to interpret learning results…

Baddeley, Alan – Journal of Communication Disorders, 2003
This article introduces the concept of a multi-component working memory. Emphasis is placed on the phonological loop component, its fractionation into a storage and processing component, and implications for native and second language learning. An overview of the visual spatial sketchpad and its possible role in language is provided. (Contains…

Dawson, P. W.; Busby, P. A.; McKay, C. M.; Clark, G. M. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2002
A study assessed auditory sequential, short-term memory (SSTM) performance in 24 children (ages 5-11) using cochlear implants (CI). The CI group did not have a sequential memory deficit specific to the auditory modality. Visual spatial memory was the main predictor of variance in the language scores of the CI group. (Contains references.)…

Reese, Elaine – Social Development, 2002
Reviews the literature on the role of self understanding, language, theory of mind, attachment security, and parental style in children's autobiographical memory development. Waldron, Karen A.; Saphire, Diane G. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1990
Twenty-four gifted children with learning disabilities and a control group of nondisabled gifted children were administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised. The 8- to 12-year-old subjects were found to be more reliant on verbal conceptualization and reasoning than controls and demonstrated deficiencies in short-term auditory…

Overton, Terry; Apperson, Jennifer – Diagnostique, 1989
The Cognitive Levels Test (CLT) and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R) were administered to 30 freshman college students at a small state college in the mid-Atlantic region. Significant correlations indicate that the PPVT-R measures a component of the CLT. Mean PPVT-R scores were significantly higher than CLT means. (Author/PB)
