Pea, Roy D. – Journal of Child Language, 1979
Examines recent attempts to explain children's word use and selection through recourse to information theory. It is concluded that information theory cannot account for the complexities involved in early word selection. (AM)

Dixon, Peter; Rothkopf, Ernst Z. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979
Reports on three experiments that: (1) extend the findings of Scarborough et al. (1977) that exposure to single words facilitates lexical judgments of single words, and (2) suggest that recency of exposure may contribute to word "frequency" effects in reading and in learning from written material. Mirabile, Paul J.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1978
Children 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 years of age were tested on their ability to identify simultaneous and time-staggered dichotic consonant-vowel stimuli. (JBM)

Novak, Joseph D. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1979
Presented is a paradigm for science education research. The paradigm advances the reception learning theory, where regularities to be learned are presented explicitly to the learner. A tool for the study of knowledge production in science education, the Gowin "V," is presented. (RE)

Jensen, Arthur R.; Munro, Ella – Intelligence, 1979
Information processing was measured in terms of reaction time and movement time to stimulus displays which differed in amount of information transmitted. Only reaction time increased as a linear function of number of bits in the stimulus display. Both show individual differences which significantly correlated with intelligence. (Author/RD)

Lachman, Janet L.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1979
The present experiment was designed to assess possible age-related differences in metamemory accuracy and efficiency by using a feeling-of-knowing judgment in conjunction with a timed question-answering task. Subjects were 12 college students (19-22 years of age), 12 middle-aged (44-53 years) and 12 elderly (65-74 years) persons. (Author/MP)

Durso, Francis T.; Johnson, Marcia K. – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1979
Subjects named or categorized a picture preceded sometime earlier by itself or by its verbal label, as well as a word preceded by itself or a pictorial counterpart. Pictures clearly profited more when the task was naming, whereas words profited more when subjects performed a categorization task. (Author/GDC)

Britton, Bruce K.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1979
A target paragraph was embedded in one passage where the target was of major importance, and one where it was of minor importance. Free recall, reading time, and usage of cognitive capacity were measured. There was greater recall when the target was important. The selective-attention hypothesis was not supported. (Author/GDC)

Kunen, Seth; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory, 1979
The spread of encoding concept was tested visually by having subjects view pictures which varied in contour completeness. The hypothesis was supported that as contour completeness decreased, the amount of perceptual analysis and memory performance would increase. (Author/MH)

Stahl, Robert J. – Theory and Research in Social Education, 1979
Stresses that values and moral education can be compatible with content-oriented social studies instruction. Explains how teachers of junior and senior high school students can assist students to use problem-solving and decision-making processes to make rational decisions, clarify values, and understand content. Anzai, Yuichiro; Simon, Herbert A. – Psychological Review, 1979
A theory is proposed of the processes which enable a subject to learn while solving a problem. One subject's protocol--including 224 steps and taking 90 minutes--is described. Adequacy of the mechanisms is guaranteed by a computer simulation of the processes in an adaptive production system. (Author/GDC)

Gelman, Rochel – American Psychologist, 1979
Reviews evidence against theories about preschool childrens' egocentricity and cognitive ineptness in the areas of classification, communication, number and order concepts, memory skills, and capacity for reasoning about causal relationships. Holds that preschoolers have been misunderstood because researchers tend to approach them with tasks…

Warner, Steven G.; Jepsen, David A. – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1979
Findings indicated that group format was related to criteria of choice basis complexity in career decisions for high conceptual level students only. No significant interaction was obtained for attitudes toward career decisions and planning activity. (Author)

Gross, Karen; Rothenberg, Stephen – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1979
Two methodological problems often arising in dyslexia research are considered. The first problem concerns the validity of experimental measures and the related problem of interpreting null results. The second problem involves the effects of sampling from a disabled population if the disorder under investigation has multiple unknown origins.…

McGill-Franzen, Anne – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1979
To demonstrate how one might go beyond mechanical errors to describe, measure, and evaluate student writing as communication, several evaluation procedures were applied to a brief writing protocol submitted by an adolescent learning disabled student. (Author/DLS)
