Peer reviewedBlais, Mark A.; And Others – Assessment, 1994
The relationship among the nine clinical syndrome scales of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II (MCMI-II) and clinical scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) was studied with 108 psychiatric inpatients. Results indicate convergent validity of only the MCMI-II Axis I scales. (SLD)

Charlton, Janice M. – Journal of Instruction Delivery Systems, 1995
Investigation and study of the mutualities among andragogy, interactive courseware, and distance education will benefit educators in providing adult learners with the most effective education; knowledge gained will ensure that instruction is consistent with the principles of andragogy and capitalizes on the merits of courseware. (AEF)

Peer reviewedFancher, Raymond E. – Alberta Journal of Educational Research, 1995
"The Bell Curve" declares that studies of separated identical twins--the "purest" of "direct" methods for estimating IQ heritability--indicate a value of +.75-+.80. But, the main study cited suggests a heritability of "two-thirds" for the middle class, and Herrnstein and Murray neglect to mention numerous…

Peer reviewedRowe, David C.; And Others – Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, 1995
Investigates whether the determinants of males' higher level of delinquency, as compared to females, resemble determinants of within-sex variation. Results indicate that the mean difference in delinquency between males and females may arise because males are more exposed to etiologic factors, such as impulsivity and rebelliousness, than are…

Peer reviewedLee, Richard M.; Robbins, Steven B. – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1995
Developed two self-report measures of belongingness (social connectedness and social assurance) based on self psychology theory. Measures proved to be highly reliable and unidimensional. Social connectedness was related to one's opinion of self in relation to other people. Social assurance correlated with one's reliance on other people. (RJM)

Peer reviewedOdell, Patricia; Schumacher, Phyllis – Primus, 1995
Correlations of a test of algebra skills, SAT mathematics scores, and final mathematics grades indicated that most college freshmen would be better placed in mathematics courses by using the test of algebra skills and SAT scores than by using SAT scores alone. (18 references) (Author/MKR)
Descriptors: Algebra, College Freshmen, Correlation, Higher Education
Peer reviewedBacon, Donald R. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1995
A maximum likelihood approach to correlational outlier identification is introduced and compared to the Mahalanobis D squared and Comrey D statistics through Monte Carlo simulation. Identification performance depends on the nature of correlational outliers and the measure used, but the maximum likelihood approach is the most robust performance…

Peer reviewedWaller, Glenn; And Others – Journal of Interpersonal Violence, 1995
Describes an information-processing task that assesses the degree of attentional bias toward words with abusive connotations. In a group of eating-disordered women, this instrument was used to demonstrate that reported sexual abuse was associated with a greater cognitive bias toward abuse-related information. Associated with self-denigratory…

Peer reviewedTracz, Susan M.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1992
Effects of violating the independence assumption when combining correlation coefficients in a meta-analysis were studied. This Monte-Carlo simulation varied sample size, predictor number, population intercorrelation among predictors, and population correlation between predictors and criterion. Combining statistics from nonindependent data in a…

Peer reviewedBecker, Betsy Jane – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1992
Combining information to estimate standardized partial regression coefficients in a linear model is discussed. A combined estimate obtained from the pooled correlation matrix is proposed, and its large sample distribution is obtained. The method is generalized to handle a random effects model in which correlation parameters vary across studies.…

Peer reviewedCornwall, Anne; Bawden, Harry N. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1992
This review examines the relationship between specific reading disabilities and aggressive behavior. It finds that there is not enough evidence to conclude that reading disability causes aggressive or delinquent behavior, though limited evidence does suggest that reading disability may worsen preexisting aggressive behavior. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Aggression, Correlation, Delinquency, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedDe Ayala, R. J.; Hertzog, Melody A. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1991
Multidimensional scaling (MDS) and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were compared in the assessment of the dimensionality of data sets, using sets generated to be one-dimensional or two-dimensional and differing in degree of interdimensional correlation and number of items defining a dimension. (SLD)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Correlation, Equations (Mathematics), Factor Structure
Peer reviewedBorg, Ingwer; Staufenbiel, Thomas – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1992
The representation of multivariate data by icons is discussed. The factorial sun is suggested as superior to the commonly used snowflake or sun icons and as better representing the values of the different variables and their correlational structure. Two experiments with 60 college students demonstrate the factorial sun's superiority. (SLD)

Peer reviewedLerman, Dorothea C.; Iwata, Brian A. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1993
Independent descriptive (correlational) and functional (experimental) analyses, conducted with six subjects with profound mental retardation exhibiting self-injurious behavior (SIB), found that the descriptive analysis was useful in identifying the extent to which SIB was related to social versus nonsocial contingencies but was limited in its…
Descriptors: Adults, Behavior Disorders, Correlation, Experiments
Peer reviewedHsu, Louis M. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1994
Item overlap coefficient (IOC) formulas are discussed, providing six warnings about their calculation and interpretation and some explanations of why item overlap influences the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory factor structures. (SLD)
Descriptors: Correlation, Definitions, Equations (Mathematics), Factor Structure
