This paper argues that they are in fact based on semantically or logically different assumptions. The paper reviews some past treatments of the connectives and suggests an alternative analysis in terms…

Halliday, Gordon W. – Journal of Drug Education, 1976
The hypothesis that drug attitude effects of drug education would vary as a function of the valences of the facts learned was tested. Undergraduates (N=48) interacted with a computer to request and receive pseudo-facts about a bogus drug. As predicted, students who received all positive facts evaluated the drug more favorably. de Cornulier, B. – Etudes de Linguistique Appliquee, 1975
In analyzing utterances whose singular property is to become true simply by being uttered, this article discusses the theory of explicit performatives and proposes an alternative explanation which focuses on meaning rather than on the fact of these utterances are speech acts. Becker, Alton L. – Linguistics, 1975
The Burmese classifier system is coherent because it is based upon a single elementary semantic dimension: deixis. On that dimension, four distances are distinguished, distances which metaphorically substitute for other conceptual relations between people and other living beings, people and things, and people and concepts. Lee, D. A. – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1975
A comparison is made of two different approaches to the treatment of modals in the framework of a transformational grammar--that of Seuren, who analyzes modals as "operators," and that of the generative semanticists who take them to be "higher verbs." Implications for language teaching are discussed. (Author/RM)

Lorch, Robert F. – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Examines the verification of false sentences of the form "All S are P." It was found that the number of properties shared by the subject and predicate concept of the sentence was directly proportional to reaction time. These findings question the assumption that only property relations are prestored in memory. (Author/EJS)
