Loper, Ann B. – Exceptional Education Quarterly: Teaching Exceptional Children to Use Cognitive Strategies, 1980
An examination of the role of metacognitive thinking (a secondary level of understanding in which an individual shows knowledge of his/her own cognitive process and products) in the cognitive training of exceptional students is presented. (PHR)

Tall, David – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1980
A concept of infinity is described which extrapolates the measuring rather than counting aspects of number. Various theorems are proved in detail to show that "false" properties of infinity in a cardinal sense are "true" in a measuring sense. (MP)

Carnine, Douglas – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1980
Efficiency was compared between three procedures for sequencing examples with minimal stimulus variation between adjacent positive and negative examples: dynamic, static, and static with maximal differences between pairs. For young children, increasing relevant feature saliency and altering a single stimulus to generate examples reduced training…

Hauck, Philomena – Education Canada, 1979
The author states her belief that the school library (in this case used synonymously with resource center and media center) fosters creativity, freedom of thought, individualized study, and self-education. She believes, therefore, that the school library should be thought of as an essential component in the instructional process. (KC)

Cheung, Y. L. – Journal of Science and Mathematics Education in Southeast Asia, 1980
Synthesized are a number of learning theories (those of Piaget, Bruner, Gagne, Dienes and Skemp) to form one composite teaching-learning model. This model is then applied to mathematics teaching. An example is provided to illustrate how the model may be used to elaborate a teaching-learning scheme for solving quadratic equations. (Author/DS)

Cognitive Psychology, 1980
Two experiments found that integration of facts alleviates interference only when a person can perform a memory task by making a consistency judgment and can avoid the need to retrieve a specific fact. People judge themes rather than facts: the more themes associated with a concept, the greater the interference. (Author/RD)

Markham, Ellen M.; And Others – Cognition, 1980
Children aged 6 to l7 were taught novel class inclusion hierarchies, analogous to the relation among oaks, pines, and trees. The results indicated that the part-whole structure of collections is simpler to establish and maintain than the structure of inclusion. (Author/RL)

Novak, Joseph D. – American Biology Teacher, 1981
Discusses applications of Ausubelian learning theory to the teaching of biology. The use of concept maps and Gowin's Epistemological V are described. Scoring methods and evaluation techniques are also discussed. (CS)

Gormley, Kathleen A.; Geoffrion, Leo D. – Reading Teacher, 1981
Argues that the language experience approach is a good technique to use to teach reading to deaf and hearing impaired children, but that the rationale for the technique presented by Russell G. Stauffer is misleading in regard to the way such children learn. (Author/FL)

Reigeluth, Charles M.; Sari, Fulya – NSPI Journal, 1980
Briefly summarizes some recent advances in instructional science and indicates how this knowledge can be used to improve the instructional quality of textbooks and other instructional materials. Procedures for developing a textbook and for evaluating a textbook are provided. (Author/MER)

Burton, Grace M. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1980
College students are assessed for their abilities at horizontal and vertical spatial tasks. Differences between males and females and between vertical and horizontal tests are covered in this study. (MP)

Harris, Larry P. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1980
Eighteen profoundly retarded men (mean age 41) were given repeated presentations of a two-choice visual discrimination using a modified Wisconsin General Test Apparatus and two probabilistic reinforcement schedules counterbalanced for order. (Author)

Bourque, Mary Lyn – Reading Research Quarterly, 1980
Describes a study that attempted to establish whether or not a hierarchy exists among selected reading skills, to establish the direction and strength of such a relationship, and to compare empirical methodologies for establishing hierarchical relationships. (MKM)
