A hierarchy for rational number addition was constructed using intraconcept analysis. A test to assess mastery at each of 45 levels was administered to 200 elementary students representing a wide range of achievement and ability levels. Sixty-one Japanese kindergarten children were pretested on their concept of speed; approximately half of the children (experimental group) were then given a demonstration of visual speed, and the entire group was posttested.
