Berberian, S. K. – Mathematics Magazine, 1992
Demonstrates the number theory property that the number of divisors of an integer n times the number of positive integers k, less than or equal to and relatively prime to n, equals the sum of the divisors of n using theory developed about multiplicative functions, the units of a convolution ring, and the Mobius Function. Greene, Gary – Learning Disabilities Research and Practice, 1999
Twenty-three elementary and middle school students with learning disabilities were taught 14 difficult-to-memorize multiplication facts with a combination of mnemonic and traditional instruction. Results indicated that mnemonic training enhanced learning and these benefits were retained over time. (Author/DB)

Mack, Nancy K. – Teaching Children Mathematics, 1998
Presents an approach for teaching the multiplication of fractions by helping students build a foundation on the basis of their informal knowledge. Suggests some action research ideas for teachers to try in their classrooms. (ASK)

Pauli, P.; Bourne, L. E., Jr.; Birbaumer, N. – Mathematical Cognition, 1998
Presents a study in which participants were trained on nine single-digit multiplication problems over three sessions. Transfer of practice was tested with nine different multiplication problems in the fourth session for half the participants. Interprets problem-size, transfer, and retention effects within a network-interference model of mental…

Cates, Gary L.; Dalenberg, Abby E. – Journal of Behavioral Education, 2005
This study investigated the extent to which interspersing effects are consistent with the effects of reinforcement on predicting students' preferences for mathematics assignments. Students were exposed to 4 pairs of assignments. Each assignment pair contained a control assignment with 15 problems requiring multiplication of a three digit number by…

Korvorst, Marjolein; Nuerk, Hans-Christoph; Willmes, Klaus – Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, 2007
This study examines a wide range of numerical representations (i.e., quantity, knowledge of multiplication facts, and use of parity information) in adult deaf signers. We introduce a modified version of the number bisection task, with sequential stimulus presentation, which allows for a systematic examination of mathematical skills in deaf…

Bobis, Janette – Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, 2007
Drawing upon research, theory, classroom and personal experiences, this paper focuses on the development of primary-aged children's computational fluency. It emphasises the critical links between number sense and a child's ability to perform mental and written computation. The case of multi-digit multiplication is used to illustrate these…

Kline, Kate; Flowers, Judy – 1998
This six month study investigated the similarities and differences between 137 fourth graders' understanding of and reasoning about multiplication, division, and proportion tasks. All students were administered a pretest mid-year and a posttest at the end of year. A sample of 18 students was interviewed individually on tasks involving reasoning…
