Peer reviewedHarvey, John G. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1991
Discussed is the idea that, if students are allowed to use calculators when doing classwork, they should be allowed to use calculators on tests. Examples of calculator-active items are presented that are designed to accurately assess students' learning. (KR)
Descriptors: Calculators, Computation, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics
Peer reviewedClifford, Margaret M.; Chou, Fen-Chang – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1991
Fourth grade Taiwan students (94 males and 97 females) completed 2 cognitive risk-taking tasks with variable payoff or fixed payoff in a game or test context. Both variable payoff and game context increased the level of academic risk taking. Results are discussed concerning interactions between ability and risk taking. (SLD)
Descriptors: Academic Ability, Cognitive Measurement, Comparative Analysis, Context Effect
Peer reviewedMayer, Richard E.; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1991
A mathematics achievement test was taken by 132 U.S. and 110 Japanese fifth graders. Scores were higher for the Japanese, and relatively better for computation than problem solving. The reverse was true for the U.S. students. Results are discussed in terms of amount and kind of exposure to mathematics. (SLD)
Descriptors: Achievement Tests, Comparative Testing, Computation, Cross Cultural Studies
Peer reviewedChan, Jason C. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1991
A study involving 102 high school students (49 males and 53 females) from Taiwan revealed that the order of response scale labels had a primacy effect on subjects' choices of the alternatives in Likert-type attitude scales. Practical implications of the response-order effects for measurement are discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Correlation, Factor Analysis, Factor Structure, Foreign Countries
Peer reviewedPillemer, David B. – Educational Researcher, 1991
Adherence to the arbitrary 0.05 level of significance as a benchmark for decisions about publishing research largely accounts for the popularity of one-tailed hypothesis tests. Effect size estimates, accompanied by confidence intervals or exact two-tailed probabilities, are generally more compatible with the growing meta-analytic view of social…

Peer reviewedSwatton, Peter – British Educational Research Journal, 1992
Examines children's ability to formulate testable hypotheses, both from a theoretical viewpoint and from results of a British study of responses to an assessment instrument. Addresses implications for science education and difficulties in judging whether a child has demonstrated the skill. Concludes that evidence presented by teachers about…

Problem-Solving Behaviors during a Genetics Computer Simulation: Beyond the Expert/Novice Dichotomy.
Peer reviewedSimmons, Patricia E.; Lunetta, Vincent N. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1993
The problem-solving behaviors and genetics concepts employed by experts and novices during interaction with the computer simulation CATLAB, were examined. Thirteen subjects (3 experts and 10 novices) investigated a common hypothesis on a specific genetic trait during the computer activity. Using naturalistic research methods, general patterns of…

Peer reviewedFrigon, Jean-Yves; Laurencelle, Louis – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1993
The statistical power of analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and its advantages over simple analysis of variance are examined in some experimental situations, and an algorithm is proposed for its proper application. In nonrandomized experiments, an ANCOVA is generally not a good approach. (SLD)
Descriptors: Algorithms, Analysis of Covariance, Analysis of Variance, Educational Research
Peer reviewedMurphy, Paud – Comparative Education Review, 1993
Compares Malawi's study center system of secondary education, involving community centers, distance education institutions, radio programs, and self-instructional materials, with traditional secondary schools with regard to cost, access, full-examination passes, and subject passes. Finds that study centers increase access to second-level education…

Peer reviewedWeber, Larry; Sherman, Thomas M. – Evaluation Practice, 1993
The grade improvement program "Where There's a Will There's an A" was evaluated with 36 experimental and 37 control group undergraduates. The approach and content of the evaluated materials appear inconsistent with the body of research on academic improvement, and study results do not indicate any improved achievement. (SLD)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Achievement Gains, Comparative Testing, Control Groups
Peer reviewedFidler, James R. – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1993
Criterion-related validities of 2 laboratory practitioner certification examinations for medical technologists (MTs) and medical laboratory technicians (MLTs) were assessed for 81 MT and 70 MLT examinees. Validity coefficients are presented for both measures. Overall, summative ratings yielded stronger validity coefficients than ratings based on…
Descriptors: Achievement Rating, Certification, Comparative Testing, Credentials
Peer reviewedMoeller, Aleidine J. – Foreign Language Annals, 1993
Studied the effect of grading classroom communicative activities on student performance at two different levels. Results indicated no significant difference in scores between the experimental and control groups at either level. (10 references) (VWL)
Descriptors: Class Activities, Communicative Competence (Languages), Difficulty Level, Language Proficiency
Peer reviewedGubbins, Rachel; Hayes, Bente – American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 1993
A survey by the European Pharmaceutical Students' Committee of its member countries investigated the extent of problem-based learning, the effectiveness of examinations for testing knowledge, role of English as the language of instruction, best teaching methods, and relationships with other health occupations. Results and a position statement are…
Descriptors: English, Foreign Countries, Higher Education, Interprofessional Relationship
Peer reviewedAssor, Avi; And Others – Child Development, 1990
Addresses three issues concerning the assessment of the overrating and underrating of academic competence: (1) the impossibility of separating effects of overrating and underrating from effects of perceived and actual competence; (2) the questionable validity of Connell and Ilardi's method; and (3) the proposal of a new method and its implications…

Peer reviewedJohncock, Phil – College and University, 1991
A survey of 100 universities revealed test types, cut-off scores, and processes for testing language proficiency and performance of international teaching assistants. Results indicated the tests are complicated, time-consuming, and politically sensitive. Issues emerging include department role, use of adjustment period before teaching, and…
