Education with a Systems Theory and Control Perspective
Bahar Memarian1; Tenzin Doleck1
Education and Information Technologies, v30 n9 p12249-12266 2025
Research has paid less attention to the formalization of education from a systems theory and control perspective, rather than a mere algorithmic one. In this work, the underpinnings of system theory and control are provided, along with a review of their application in education. The review of studies in databases found only seven articles that pertained to the systems' conceptions of education. The review of these seven studies showed that ideas for adopting a systems theory and control theory view of literature have been provided since the 1940s; yet little attention has been paid to it as a research field in education. Consequently, one set view may give an incomplete picture, and the perspectives taken by the seven studies could be utilized in future research. Notably, the conversation about systems theory and control in the presence of artificial intelligence (AI) is missing. A summary of challenges and future considerations for a systems theory and control perspective of education in light of AI is also presented. The contribution of this work lies in opening discussions on an area that has been less explored, that is, pedagogy through a systems control perspective.
