Rose, Bruce I.; Stafford, Robert D. – American Mathematical Monthly, 1981
A college course designed to teach students about the mathematics of symmetry using pieces of wallpaper and cloth designs is presented. Mathematical structures and the symmetry of graphic designs provide the starting point for instruction. (MP)

Mathematics Teacher, 1981
Three teaching ideas are presented: how to present changes between scientific notation and decimal form that eliminate some student confusion; an analysis of an incorrect algebra equation that produced a correct answer; and aspects of a standard calculus problem dealing with minimum and maximum values. (MP)

Carpenter, Thomas P.; And Others – Arithmetic Teacher, 1981
Data from the 1977-78 mathematics assessment of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on the use of calculators are discussed. (MP) Aspect of National Assessment (NAEP) dealt with in this document: Results (Interpretation).

Thompson, John C., III – School Science and Mathematics, 1980
Results of this study, done with underachieving ninth graders, indicate that flow charting as a structure for basic skills instruction can be considered as effective as the traditional approach. (MK)

Creative Computing, 1980
This reprint of a Project Solo curriculum module discusses graphing by computer, gives an example of a BASIC program used to graph a second degree polynomial, and provides suggested exercises in programing. (MK)

Lohnes, Paul R. – American Educational Research Journal, 1979
Factorial modeling is justified as a method for analyzing correlations in support of causal inference. The method is illustrated and compared to path analysis, LISREL-type analysis, canonical correlation, and commonality analysis. Predictions of impacts of policy manipulations are demonstrated. Trotter, Terrel, Jr.; Myers, Mark D. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1980
An activity is presented which provides a novel approach to number patterns, experience in following an unusual algorithmic procedure, and practice in systematic search techniques and basic facts. (MK)

Sherrill, James M. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1979
This study was implemented to test the relative effectiveness of two subtraction procedures (decomposition and equal addends) with respect to accuracy in solving subtraction problems requiring regrouping. Results favor the decomposition approach. (MP)

Idle, Marion – Mathematics in School, 1979
The importance of place value is discussed. Examples illustrating place value in addition and subtraction are given. (MK)
Descriptors: Addition, Algorithms, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics
Jamski, William D. – MATYC Journal, 1979
This study of seventh graders investigated the use of the calculator in learning conversion algorithms among fractions, decimals, and percents. The calculator was successful with some topics but not with others. (MP)

McKillip, William D.; Aviv, Cherie Adler – Arithmetic Teacher, 1979
An approach is suggested to the use of sets of practice exercises that is more like the actual use of computation by adults and may be more effective in attaining accuracy and speed. (MP)

Zelnio, Robert N.; And Others – American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, 1977
The development of a simple computer algorithm designed for use by the individual educator or researcher in maintaining and searching reprint files is reported. Called BIBLIO, the system is inexpensive and easy to operate and maintain without sacrificing flexibility and utility. (LBH)

Savoy, Jacques – Information Processing & Management, 1997
Discussion of evaluation methodology in information retrieval focuses on the average precision over a set of fixed recall values in an effort to evaluate the retrieval effectiveness of a search algorithm. Highlights include a review of traditional evaluation methodology with examples; and a statistical inference methodology called bootstrap.…

Johnson, Andrew; Fotouhi, Farshad – Information Systems, 1996
Discussion of hypermedia systems focuses on a comparison of two types of adaptive algorithm (genetic algorithm and neural network) in clustering hypermedia documents. These clusters allow the user to index into the nodes to find needed information more quickly, since clustering is "personalized" based on the user's paths rather than…
