Lesner, Sharon A.; And Others – Journal of the Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology, 1988
The feasibility of using a single-subject design to study continuous discourse tracking skills was investigated in four normal-hearing young adults. Results indicated that the single subject paradigm was an effective way to measure differences in auditory behavior with and without an assistive listening device in reverberant conditions. Kim, Jun W.; Tyler, Richard S. – American Journal of Audiology, 1995
This article introduces the use of multilayered artificial neural networks in hearing aid noise recognition. It reviews basic principles of neural networks, and offers an example of an application in which a neural network is used to identify the presence or absence of noise in speech. The ability of neural networks to "learn" the…

Meyer, Dianne H.; And Others – American Journal of Audiology, 1995
This report examines how the teacher-practitioner model has been developed and is implemented at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center (Chicago, Illinois) in the professional training of audiologists. Discussed are the model's attributes, integration of the clinical and academic programs, advantages of the model, demands of the model, and…

Glattke, Theodore J.; And Others – American Journal of Audiology, 1995
Measures of transient evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE) reproducibility were obtained for 506 ears of 260 children and young adults. Findings suggest that TEOAEs provide useful information in routine clinical practice and may be employed to screen for the presence of hearing loss in children and young adults. (DB)

Dempsey, James J.; Linzalone, Tanya G. – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1991
This study, involving 15 older adults with hearing impairments, investigated the relationship between sentence recognition ability and two types of signal processing in hearing aids. Results indicated a significant improvement in sentence recognition when employing an instrument with adaptive compression versus an instrument with an adaptive…

Macrae, John H. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1991
The study evaluated use of the Modified Power Law to predict permanent threshold shift (PTS) resulting from noise exposure in eight children with severe sensorineural hearing loss attributed to overamplification by hearing aids. The PTS tended to be flat across frequency with its course similar to PTS in persons with normal hearing exposed to…

Logemann, Jeri A. – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 1998
Introduces six articles which address treatment outcomes and efficacy in audiology and speech-language pathology in the schools. Stresses the importance of practitioners participating in studies of treatment outcomes and efficacy to demonstrate that their evaluations and treatments make a significant difference to individuals served. Torre, Peter, III; Cruickshanks, Karen J.; Klein, Barbara E.K.; Klein, Ronald; Nondahl, David M. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2005
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the relation between self-reported cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cochlear function in older adults. The Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study (EHLS) is an ongoing population-based study of hearing loss and its risk factors in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. As part of the EHLS questionnaire, participants were…

McKay, Sarah – Volta Review, 2006
Children with unilateral hearing loss (UHL) are at risk for academic, speech and language and social-emotional difficulties. To date, most of the evidence documented in the literature has been obtained from school-age children, most of whom were diagnosed with UHL after enrollment in school. Following the widespread institution of universal…

Fitzgerald, Tracy S.; Prieve, Beth A. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2005
Although many distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) may be measured in the ear canal in response to 2 pure tone stimuli, the majority of clinical studies have focused exclusively on the DPOAE at the frequency 2f1-f2. This study investigated another DPOAE, 2f2-f1, in an attempt to determine the following: (a) the optimal stimulus…

Stratton, Alison – Teachers College Record, 2007
Background/Context: This article returns to and expands upon Cremin's and Garfinkel's ideas about education as work--deliberate, systematic, and sustained work--that changes one's consociates, whether planned or not. That is, education must be seen as occurring everywhere, to and by everyone, in many contexts other than in classrooms or schools.…

Eilers, Rebecca E.; And Others – 1987
A battery of assessments to determine the potential contribution of tactual aids to the acoustic perception and speech identification of young deaf children was developed. The tasks were developed so that they could be implemented with standard audiometric equipment and applied to subjects of varying age and to different types of tactual aids.…
