The independence and objectivity of institutional researchers is discussed. It is suggested that university administration has some control over institutional research but that administrators do not dictate the findings or conclusions of the research. (BH)

Artificially induced expectancy of essay quality and handwriting quality of essays were shown to affect reader ratings of essay tests. There was a significant effect for expectancy, none for handwriting, and an interesting but non-significant interaction effect. (JKS)

The distorted representation of women and other minority groups in the media is the subject of this essay. It is argued that underrepresentation of women, including their stereotypic portrayals, reflect a woman's real lack of power in society. The author asserts that, by strict Aristotelian logic, only two positions on moral values are possible: absolutist or relativist. Noting the political and instructional difficulties this dichotomy implies for the schools, he proposes instead a continuum of value types which would allow greater choice and flexibility in moral instruction. This article argues that the stagnation, pessimism, and self-pity evident in recent Black writing results in part from the alienation of Black writers from the mainstream of Black life, and in part from the illusions that they share with other Blacks who have embraced the American value system.
