Wren, F. Lynwood – Math Teacher, 1969
Four periods of history are reviewed in an effort to build an informative background on the evolution of mathematics as a serious study in the schools. These four periods are (1) 300 B.C., (2) the second quarter of the 17th century, (3) the second quarter of the 19th century, and (4) the four decades of the 20th century from 1925 to 1965. (RP)

Freedman, Haya – American Mathematical Monthly, 1983
A method used in teaching abstract algebra is described; it could be applied to other classes. Students play a more active part in their own education by helping to select, prepare, and present material to the class. (MNS)

Arndt, A. B. – Mathematics Teacher, 1983
Facts are given about the ninth-century Arab mathematician Al-Khwarizmi, from whose name the word algorithm is derived. His influence on algebra and arithmetic are discussed. (MNS)

Filippone, Samuel R.; Fossum, Timothy V. – MATYC Journal, 1980
A chronology of activities which have led to the design of a comprehensive mathematics algebra program is described. (Author/MK)

Travers, Robert; Kim, David – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
A method for finding the complex roots of a graph is detailed. A conjecture is made regarding the nature of zero points of fourth-degree polynomial functions, but it is not proven in general. Mathematical induction is viewed as a promising tool to prove the conjecture that turned out unproductive. (MP)

Barr, George – Mathematics in School, 1981
This investigation concerns student understanding of the concept of gradient. Six items are discussed from a series of tests constructed for Technical Education Council (TEC) qualification. It is concluded that confusion exists, and a summary of apparent student difficulties is presented. (MP)

Smith, Brother Albertus – Mathematics Teacher, 1979
A "lab method" for solving quadratic equations is presented. Suggestions for applying the method in the classroom are given. (MK)
