Peer reviewedDiLalla, David L. – Assessment, 1996
A computer-administered (CA) form of the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire (MPQ) (A. Tellegen, 1982) was created, and scores of 126 college students were compared to those of 101 who took a paper-and-pencil MPQ. Multivariate analyses found no group differences for the CA format, and likelihood of profile validity was decreased. Results…

Peer reviewedBennett, Randy Elliot; Steffen, Manfred; Singley, Mark Kevin; Morley, Mary; Jacquemin, Daniel – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1997
Scoring accuracy and item functioning were studied for an open-ended response type test in which correct answers can take many different surface forms. Results with 1,864 graduate school applicants showed automated scoring to approximate the accuracy of multiple-choice scoring. Items functioned similarly to other item types being considered. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adaptive Testing, Automation, College Applicants, Computer Assisted Testing
Peer reviewedStahl, John; Shumway, Rebecca; Bergstrom, Betty; Fisher, Anne – Journal of Outcome Measurement, 1997
The development of an online performance assessment instrument, the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills, is reported. Issues addressed include development, implementation, and validation of the scoring rubric in an extended Rasch model, rater training, and implementation of the assessment in a computerized program. (SLD)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Testing, Item Response Theory, Online Systems, Performance Based Assessment
Peer reviewedShermis, Mark D.; And Others – Journal of Developmental Education, 1996
Describes a study to pilot-test a new reading assessment instrument designed to function in a computerized adaptive testing (CAT) environment. Indicates that the measure showed fair internal consistency and correlated well with other tests. Discusses advantages and disadvantages of CAT systems and describes the HyperCAT testing program. (23…

Peer reviewedChapelle, Carol A. – Applied Language Learning, 1996
Probes validity issues of computer-assisted strategy assessment in second language acquisition research. Reviews metacognitive and cognitive strategies, discussing trait-oriented and interactionist approaches in the concept of strategy, and examining validity by focusing on "advance preparation" and "resourcing" examples of…

Peer reviewedSukigara, Masune – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1996
The New Japanese version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was administered twice to 200 Japanese female college students to verify the equivalence of the computer- and booklet-administered formats. For four scales, scores from the computer version were statistically significantly higher than those from the booklet…

Peer reviewedHeift, Trude; Schulze, Mathias – System, 2003
Provides examples of student modeling techniques that have been employed in computer-assisted language learning over the past decade. Describes two systems for learning German: "German Tutor" and "Geroline." Shows how a student model can support computerized adaptive language testing for diagnostic purposes in a Web-based language learning…
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Assisted Testing, German, Language Usage
Peer reviewedHulstijn, Jan H. – Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 1997
Discusses possibilities and limitations of laboratory research methods for testing theories of second language acquisition. Reviews experimental lab studies and focuses on the motivation for conducting these studies, the use of artificial or semiartificial language structures and different design features. (54 references) (Author/CK)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Testing, Language Research, Linguistic Theory, Literature Reviews
Peer reviewedKobrin, Jennifer L.; Young, John W. – Applied Measurement in Education, 2003
Studied the cognitive equivalence of computerized and paper-and-pencil reading comprehension tests using verbal protocol analysis. Results for 48 college students indicate that the only significant difference between the computerized and paper-and-pencil tests was in the frequency of identifying important information in the passage. (SLD)
