Milchus, Norman J. – 1971
The Wayne County Pre-Reading Program for Preventing Reading Failure is an individually, diagnostically prescribed, perceptual-cognitive-linguistic development program. The program utilizes the largest compilation of prescriptively coded, reading readiness materials to be assigned prior to and concurrent with first-year reading instruction. The…
Descriptors: Correlation, Diagnostic Teaching, Diagnostic Tests, Educational Diagnosis
Donnangelo, Frank P. – 1973
A stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed in order to explore the possibility of predicting the quality of a counselor's performance from the values of five predictor variables. The opportunity to make such predictions could prove useful to Deans of Students in making decisions concerning personnel deployment, in-service training,…
Descriptors: Counselor Evaluation, Counselor Performance, Counselors, Decision Making

Lloyd, Dee Norman – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1978
Background characteristics, school performance, and achievement test data were analyzed for 788 third-grade boys and 774 third-grade girls who were known later to have become high school dropouts or graduates. As early as the third grade a variety of variables were predictive of later status. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Dropout Characteristics, Dropouts, Elementary Secondary Education, Failure

Schmidt, Frank L.; And Others – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1978
The present study examined and evaluated the application of linear policy-capturing models to the real-world decision task of graduate admissions. Utility of the policy-capturing models was great enough to be of practical significance, and least-squares weights showed no predictive advantage over equal weights. (Author/CTM)
Descriptors: Admission Criteria, College Admission, Grade Point Average, Graduate Study

DeBoeck, Paul – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1978
A comparison was made of responses to two types of personality inventory items, either sentence-type items or adjective-type items. Three methods of analysis were applied. It was concluded that the two item types give approximately equal results. (CTM)
Descriptors: Cluster Analysis, High Schools, Males, Multidimensional Scaling

Bowman, Clair Michael; Fillos, Rita M. – Journal of Educational Research, 1978
A regression procedure is described which permits the identification and testing for significance of the contribution of individual school influence to explained variance in achievement growth. (Editor/MM)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Achievement, Educational Quality, Educational Research
Pre-Veterinary Medical Grade Point Averages as Predictors of Academic Success in Veterinary College.

Julius, Marcia F.; Kaiser, Herbert E. – Journal of Veterinary Medical Education, 1978
A five-year longitudinal study was designed to find the best predictors of academic success in veterinary school at Kansas State University and to set up a multiple regression formula to be used in selecting students. The preveterinary grade point average was found to be the best predictor. (JMD)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, College Admission, Grade Point Average, Higher Education

Kukuk, Cris R.; And Others – Multiple Linear Regression Viewpoints, 1978
The direct and indirect effects of neighborhood characteristics on school-level reading achievement were investigated via path analysis in this study. Race, family structure, income, and neighborhood density were among the variables investigated. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Critical Path Method, Elementary Education, Family Income, Family Structure

Gunderson, Morley – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1978
Reports a study of alternative theories of sex discrimination which imply ambiguous predictions about the relation between the male/female earnings ratio and the status and sex composition of the occupation. Notes that about one-half of the earnings gap between the sexes can be attributed to direct discrimination in the labor market, with…

Ferber, Marianne A.; Kordick, Betty – Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1978
A survey of two cohorts of men and women who received Ph.D. degrees did not support hypotheses that the lower earnings of the women were due to their voluntary decisions, e.g., career interruptions. It was concluded that this study confirmed and extended other recent research that discrimination is a major source of sex differentials. (MF)
Descriptors: College Graduates, Comparative Analysis, Doctoral Degrees, Equal Opportunities (Jobs)

Steinnes, Donald N. – Social Forces, 1977
Focuses on the changing of neighborhoods from white to Negro. Demonstrates statistically that distance from tract or Negro area alone cannot adequately explain or predict the racial turnover of neighborhoods over a ten-year period. Such an explanation requires considering economic and social measures of geographic mobility for white residents.…
Descriptors: Community Characteristics, Dropouts, Models, Multiple Regression Analysis

Batchelor, Margaret Ryan; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1987
This research study examined the relationship between resume variables and an overall employment rating. The ratings were given by 136 superintendents or assistant superintendents evaluating four hypothetical secondary school principalship candidates' resumes. A clear relationship between the candidate resume variables and the overall employment…
Descriptors: Administrator Selection, Employment Interviews, Evaluation Methods, Evaluators

Kean, Donald K.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1987
Two experiments examined the role that college students' verbal aptitude and evaluation anxiety play in the production of persuasive letters. Results showed that verbal aptitude should be considered when predicting the quality of students writing. Taking writing anxiety into account did not increase the predictive power of verbal aptitude scores.…

Stark, Joan S.; And Others – Research in Higher Education, 1987
According to a survey of 1,700 administrators and faculty at 346 institutions, professional program administrators perceive influences on the program from within the university as stronger than do faculty. However, the two groups do not perceive the strength of societal influences, professional community influences, or internal levels of…

King, Suzanne; Wolfle, Lee M. – Research in Higher Education, 1987
A LISREL analysis demonstrates the value of regressing reputational ratings on three latent variables: size, faculty research productivity, and the quality of program graduates. The model was tested using National Research Council data for each of six disciplines: English, French, philosophy, geography, political science, and sociology.…
