Peer reviewedWilbur, W. John – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1992
Describes a procedure for information retrieval testing that is based on the comparison of statistically independent methods of retrieval applied to the same database. The probability ranking principle is discussed, the statistical meaning of relevance is examined, and the methodology is illustrated on a large database of MEDLINE records. (19…
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Databases, Information Retrieval, Mathematical Formulas
Peer reviewedRentsch, Joan R.; Heffner, Tonia S. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1992
A new scoring method for "Who Am I?" responses as a measure of self-esteem is validated and used to test the relationship between self-esteem and psychological centrality for 240 college students. The usefulness of the new scoring technique as a measure of centrality and self-esteem is discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: College Students, Higher Education, Measurement Techniques, Responses
Peer reviewedWilson, Mark – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1992
The ordered partition model is described as an extension of the partial credit model, its relationship to other models is discussed, and two examples are presented. The model is designed for a measurement context in which categories of response to an item cannot be completely ordered. (SLD)
Descriptors: Equations (Mathematics), Item Response Theory, Mathematical Models, Measurement Techniques
Peer reviewedLapp, William M.; Collins, R. Lorraine – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1993
It is argued that the relative scoring method used to score the Ways of Coping Checklist introduces an artifact that confounds multivariate analyses and ignores the individual's general reactivity to the problem. Multivariate analysis is shown to suggest an intricate structural relationship between components of coping and depression. (SLD)
Descriptors: Check Lists, Coping, Correlation, Depression (Psychology)
Peer reviewedPlake, Barbara S.; Impara, James C. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1997
Two studies of variations of the Angoff method (W. Angoff, 1971) involving nine elementary school teachers in each case compared a yes/no estimation with a proportion correct estimation for setting cut scores. Both methods yielded essentially equal cut scores, but judges found the yes/no method easier to implement. (SLD)
Descriptors: Cutting Scores, Elementary Education, Elementary School Teachers, Estimation (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedClauson, Donna J. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 1998
Describes a way to assign points to the problem-solving process. Provides a rubric-scoring example. (ASK)
Descriptors: Elementary School Mathematics, Elementary Secondary Education, Evaluation, Grading
Berkowitz, Bob – Big6 Newsletter, 1998
Presents Big6 scoring guides which focus on the process of solving information problems as well as the final results, so that the guides are useful for both formative and summative assessment. Examples are given for elementary and secondary school projects, and a general template is also provided. (LRW)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Formative Evaluation, Information Literacy, Information Skills
Peer reviewedKane, Michael – Educational Assessment, 1998
Examines criteria for choosing between test-centered and examinee-centered methods of standard setting in empirical terms and in terms of whether the method is consistent with the model of achievement underlying test design and interpretation and the assessment methods being used. Contains 35 references. (Author/SLD)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Criteria, Educational Assessment, Evaluation Methods
Castallo, Richard – American School Board Journal, 1999
School boards can learn some lessons from effective teacher evaluation and from teachers' judgment of student performance. Under a "rubric" approach, the board determines specific district goals and bases the superintendent's evaluation on whether he or she is leading the system in that direction. Board feedback is essential. (MLH)
Descriptors: Administrator Evaluation, Boards of Education, Elementary Secondary Education, Evaluation Criteria
Peer reviewedCarlson, Randal D. – Journal of Educational Technology Systems, 1999
Addresses one specific method of authentic assessment, portfolio assessment, by applying this method in two case studies assessing learning of instructional technology. Explains the differences between process portfolios and product portfolios, explains scoring rubrics, and provides suggestions for practitioners. (Author/LRW)
Descriptors: Case Studies, Educational Technology, Performance Based Assessment, Portfolio Assessment
Peer reviewedEmenaker, Charles – Ohio Journal of School Mathematics, 1999
Presents a student project in which students need to design a drainage system for a simple parking lot to study volumes of right cylinders and solids. Provides project assessment guidelines, which list a scoring criteria for this project. (ASK)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Mathematics Activities, Mathematics Instruction, Relevance (Education)
Falk, Beverly; Ort, Suzanna – Phi Delta Kappan, 1998
Building on New York State's long tradition of involving teachers in developing and evaluating state examinations, the standards-based prototypes developed through the Goals 2000 New Assessments Project relied on teachers to score exams, using guides and rubrics. The process helped teachers clarify goals and expectations, deepen disciplinary…

Peer reviewedTolls, Dorothy Bazzinotti; Carlson, Nancy; Wilson, Roger; Richman, Jack – Optometric Education, 2001
Assessed the viability of the Comprehensive Clinical Performance Grid for Student Evaluation, introduced at The New England College of Optometry in 1996 in clinical student assessment. Analyzed faculty and student feedback and consistency with previous evaluations, between evaluators, and between clinical sites and tracts. Found satisfaction with…
Descriptors: Clinical Experience, Evaluation Research, Medical Education, Optometry
Peer reviewedBennett, Randy Elliot; Morley, Mary; Quardt, Dennis – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2000
Describes three open-ended response types that could broaden the conception of mathematical problem solving used in computerized admissions tests: (1) mathematical expression (ME); (2) generating examples (GE); and (3) and graphical modeling (GM). Illustrates how combining ME, GE, and GM can form extended constructed response problems. (SLD)
Descriptors: Adaptive Testing, Computer Assisted Testing, Constructed Response, Mathematics Tests
White, Sheida; Vanneman, Alan – Education Statistics Quarterly, 2000
Presents the guide used by scorers of fourth-grade narrative writing from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in 1998, samples of students responses at each of the six levels of performance, and a discussion of the scoring method. (Author/SLD)
