Williams, Richard H.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1984
This paper describes the procedures and results of two studies designed to yield empirical comparisons of the error magnitude in three change measures: the simple gain score, the residualized difference score, and the base free measure (Tucker et al). Residualized scores possessed smaller standard errors of measurement. (Author/BS)

Becker, Joanne Rossi; Rivera, Ferdinand – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2005
This is a qualitative study of 22 9th graders performing generalizations on a task involving linear patterns. Our research questions were: What enables/hinders students' abilities to generalize a linear pattern? What strategies do successful students use to develop an explicit generalization? How do students make use of visual and numerical cues…

Sheffield, Linda Jensen – 2003
This book is a guide to the development of mathematical talent in students in grades K through 8. The first chapter is on developing mathematical promise and considers characteristics of students who are mathematically promising, the goals of mathematics instruction, how to find and/or create good problems, models for increasing the numbers and…

Brown, Roger – 1998
The increasing availability of computer algebra systems (CAS) for the high school classroom is expected to have a significant effect on how algebra is taught, when it is taught, and the expected learning types. This paper reports on a computer algebra approach to the teaching of algebra to 13-16 year old students in a high school in Melbourne,…

Bazzini, Luciana; Tsamir, Pessia – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2004
The presentations address a variety of difficulties occurring in students' solutions of equations and inequalities, and suggest different reasons for these difficulties. When analyzing students' performances, [BB] and [TTT] mention students' tendencies to make irrelevant connections between equations and inequalities as a problematic phenomenon.…

Mousoulides, Nikos; Gagatsis, Athanasios – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2004
This study explores students algebraic and geometric approach in solving tasks in functions and the relation of these approaches with complex geometric problem solving. Data were obtained from 95 sophomore pre-service teachers, enrolled in a basic algebra course. Implicative statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the relation between…

Neria, Dorit; Amit, Miriam – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2004
This research study deals with the modes of representation that ninth-graders choose in order to communicate their problem solving paths and justifications, and the relation between these modes of representations and achievement level. The findings are based on analysis of 350 answers to problems that demanded communication of reasoning,…

Rubio, Guillermo; del Valle, Rafael – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2004
The study proves that a didactical model based in a method to solve word problems of increasing complexity which uses a numerical approach was essential to develop the analytical ability and the competent use of the algebraic language with students from three different performance levels in elementary algebra. It is shown that before using the…

Filloy, Eugenio; Rojano, Teresa; Solares, Armando – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2004
We deal with the study of the senses and the meanings generated in the representation of the unknowns in the resolution of word problems involving two unknown quantities. The discussed cases show the difficulties that the students beginning the algebra learning have to deal with when using the equality between "unknown things". For them,…

Allen, Jeff; Sconing, Jim – American College Testing (ACT), Inc., 2005
In this report, we establish benchmarks of readiness for four common first-year college courses: English Composition, College Algebra, Social Science, and Biology. Using grade data from a large sample of colleges, we modeled the probability of success in these courses as a function of ACT test scores. Success was defined as a course grade of B or…

Veteto, Bette R. – 2002
This project focuses on the construction and use of a student-made elementary algebra tutorial World Wide Web page at the University of Memphis (Tennessee), how this helps students further explore the topics studied in elementary algebra, and how students can publish their work on the class Web page for use by other students. Practical,…
