The mathematics required to calculate the asymptotic standard errors of the parameters of three commonly used logistic item response models is described and used to generate values for common situations. Empirical evidence is reviewed to show that two concepts--attention and intelligence--are related at the empirical level. Data are presented to demonstrate that intelligence correlates with different types of attention, including sustained attention, search, attention switching, and vigilance. (Author/PN)

Examines the validity of a Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory code type interpretive program. Results showed the system was highly rated by three independent experienced clinicians. Ratings given to questionnaire items on four types of rating scales were compared. This study shows that the differences between scales are contingent upon the particular anchors used for the intermediate options. Presents modifications of the Pleasant and Unpleasant Events Schedules for use with an elderly population. Constructed two revised schedules by selecting only items that met endorsement criteria with an elderly sample. Both possessed excellent internal consistency and correlated well to the original schedules. (Author)

Presents a psychometric instrument, the Suicide Opinion Questionnaire (SOQ), which assesses community attitudes toward suicide. While further refinements of the SOQ are needed, results support its usefulness and also point out the complexities of attitudes toward suicide. Tested the hypothesis that subjects with elevated MMPI profiles would exhibit qualitatively different word associations from those with normal MMPI profiles. Results are interpreted as demonstrating the construct validity of the Sc scale in that the more pathological the profile, the greater degree of cognitive disturbance exhibited. (Author)

Undergraduate psychology students were administered the Mosher Forced Choice Guilt Inventory (MFCGI). Inspection of correlations and principal component solutions for each sex indicated that guilt emerges as a construct separate from anxiety or authoritarianism. Investigated the reliability, validity, and factor structure of the standard 21-item and short 13-item forms of the Beck Depression Inventory. The sample consisted of 163 participants in a methadone maintenance program. Results support the use of the short form as a reliable and valid brief screening measure of depression. (Author)

Intervention effectively ameliorated some of the psychosocial problems reported by patients. Patients evidenced a more rapid decline of negative affect (anxiety, hostility, depression), a more realistic outlook on life, a greater proportion of return to previous vocational status, and a more active pattern of time usage.
