Empirically weighted scores for Rest's Defining Issues Test were found to be more reliable than the simple sum of scores theoretically weighted sum, or Rest's p scores. They also had slightly higher correlations with Kohlberg's interview scores. Empirically weighted scores also showed more significant change in two longitudinal studies. (CTM)

A first course in psychopathology for medical students uses both conventional lecture-discussion and programmed, self-instructional formats. Examination policy for the course is described that uses quizzes and a comprehensive final mandatory only for those students failing one of the quizzes. (LBH)

Two instruments are presented: a modified Bogardus Social Distance Scale measures the behavioral aspect; factor I of a semantic differential test measures the affective aspect; factors II and III measure the cognitive. Marking is described as part of the central examinations for secondary general education in the Netherlands. These consist of two components: an external, and an internal school-based examination. Two criteria are discussed for determining cutting scores on a predictor variable for identifying cases of likely child abuse--utility maximizing and error minimizing. Utility maximizing is the preferable criterion, as it optimizes the balance between the costs of incorrect decisions and the benefits of correct decisions. (Author/JDD)
