Peer reviewedMasters, Geofferey N. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1984
This paper develops and illustrates a latent trait approach to constructing an item bank when responses are scored in several ordered categories. This approach is an extension of the methodology developed by Choppin, Wright and Stone, and Wright and Bell for the construction and maintenance of banks of dichotomously scored items. (Author/PN)

Peer reviewedKelley, Paul R.; Schumacher, Charles F. – Evaluation and the Health Professions, 1984
The National Board of Medical Examiners uses the Rasch model to calibrate test items, maintain item banks, equate scores, and monitor the consistency of examiner item response patterns. The model is also being used in the study of patient management problems examinations, standard-setting, and computer-based examinations. (Author/BS)

Peer reviewedCross, Lawrence H.; And Others – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1984
Minimum standards were established for the National Teacher Examinations (NTE) by teacher educators instructed in the use of the Angoff, Nedelsky, or Jaeger procedures. The anticipated failure rates, the psychometric characteristics of the ratings, and other factors suggest the Angoff procedure yields the most defensible standards for the NTE area…

Peer reviewedLord, Frederic M. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1984
Four methods are outlined for estimating or approximating from a single test administration the standard error of measurement of number-right test score at specified ability levels or cutting scores. The methods are illustrated and compared on one set of real test data. (Author)
Descriptors: Academic Ability, Cutting Scores, Error of Measurement, Scoring Formulas
Peer reviewedNapier, John D. – Theory and Research in Social Education, 1976
The study examined (1) whether 60 elementary school teachers could score moral thought statements into Kohlberg's moral stages by receiving special training and using a rater manual, and (2) what factors were related to their stage-scoring ability. Major conclusion was that the rater manual and training were ineffective. (Author/ND)

Peer reviewedThissen, David M. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1976
Where estimation of abilities in the lower half of the ability distribution for the Raven Progressive Matrices is important, or an increase in accuracy of ability estimation is needed, the multiple category latent trait estimation provides a rational procedure for realizing gains in accuracy from the use of information in wrong responses.…

Stronge, James H.; Hindman, Jennifer L. – Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, 2006
Turn your teacher hiring process into a research-based protocol that is more apt to select teachers who will increase student achievement. Using the teacher quality indicators from the ASCD best-selling book "Qualities of Effective Teachers, 2nd Edition," the authors take the guesswork out of teacher hiring with a systematic structure and steps…

Micceri, Ted – Online Submission, 2002
This study sought to determine whether GRE subscores (or GMAT) could predict graduation rates in related areas (math-oriented majors for GRE quantitative, etc.) in a sample of over 9,000 graduate students at a major public research university. Because few low quantitative scores were present in math-oriented majors, an attempt was made to…

Borko, Hilda; Stecher, Brian M. – National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST), 2006
This report presents findings from two investigations of the use of classroom artifacts to measure the presence of reform-oriented teaching practices in middle-school science classes. It complements previous research on the use of artifacts to describe reform-oriented teaching practices in mathematics. In both studies, ratings based on collections…

Halderson, Jeanne – National Middle School Association (NJ3), 2006
In this article, the author describes how she uses podcasting as an educational tool for her seventh grade students. Using only the applications that come pre-loaded on the Mac iBook, they work together to develop the content, write storyboards, produce and edit the podcasts, and analyze their work. Hackelton, Devon – 2002
In considering how a teacher can assert authority without giving up the benefits of classroom interaction, two premises should be acknowledged: students of a multi-ethnic classroom or with a wide range of writing skill deficiencies require more authority; and teachers should take responsibility for modeling acceptable patterns of discourse and…
