Examines gender differences in 100 male and 145 female children's (in kindergarten and grades 3, 6, and 8) activities, preferred school subjects, and occupational goals in relation to parental variables (toy giving and chore assignment). The development of sex stereotype knowledge (SSK) was studied using 120, 120, and 204 Portuguese children aged 5, 8, and 11 years, respectively. SSK increased with age and socioeconomic status. Results are compared with findings from Brazil, Latin America, and a 24-country study by D. Best and others (1977). (SLD)

The effects of problem content on mathematics word problem performance were explored for 128 male and 128 female college students solving problems with masculine, feminine, and neutral (familiar and unfamiliar) cover stories. Ethnic surnames were studied as a possible basis for stereotyped perceptions/expectations of 349 future teachers from the west and midwest. Subjects evaluated an excerpt from a book on multicultural education.
