Groff, Patrick – Elementary School Journal, 1982
Examines the proposition that low frequency monosyllabic words are more difficult to spell than high frequency monosyllabic words having the same vowel phoneme-grapheme spelling patterns. Results obtained from 1,704 second-, third-, and fourth-grade children did not support the proposition. (MP)

Thurber, Steven; Torbet, David P. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1978
A word preference format was used to investigate reactions to verbal stimuli of suicidal and nonsuicidal persons. Words with aggressive or submissive denotative meanings significantly differentiated the two groups. The word "suicide" was selected at a higher frequency level by suicidal individuals when compared to their nonsuicidal counterparts.…

Attig, Mary; Hasher, Lynn – Journal of Gerontology, 1980
Adults listened to a list containing 30 words that were repeated from zero to seven times each. Subjects were tested for sensitivity to differences in frequency of occurrence. All were equally sensitive to frequency information. Prior knowledge about the nature of the test did not affect performance. (Author)

Griggs, S.; Still, A. W. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1979
It was found that five Ss showed the usual higher rate of stuttering on consonants, while one showed more stuttering on vowels; and that a markedly higher rate was found on initial words of sentences in two Ss, both of whom were also exceptional in several other aspects of stuttering. (Author/DLS)

Scarborough, Don L.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 1977
Five reaction time experiments explored word frequency effects in word-nonword decision tasks and in pronunciation and memory tasks. Analysis of the response latencies using Sternberg's additive-factors approach indicates that frequency effects consist of both effects in encoding and in retrieval from memory. (Editor/RK)

Troia, Gary A.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1996
A study of 11 kindergarten and 11 second-grade students evaluated the effects of target word frequency and age on normally achieving children's performance of naming and phonological awareness tasks. Results supported an explicit connection between lexical retrieval and phonological awareness, mediated by working memory. (CR)

Yorkston, Kathryn M.; And Others – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1990
The study attempted to (1) identify word sequences that occur frequently among 10 linguistically intact augmented communicators, (2) determine the communality with which the various augmented communicators use specific word sequences, and (3) evaluate the usefulness of word sequences in providing keystroke savings for uses of augmentative and…

Thom, James A.; Zobel, Justin – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1992
Discusses models for the distribution of words in text and proposes a new model based on clustering that can be used to estimate the probability that a document contains a particular word as well as the number of distinct words in a document. Zipf's law and the Poisson approximation are also discussed. (18 references) (LRW)

Yamada, Jun; Kayamoto, Yuriko – Applied Psycholinguistics, 1998
A study examined the effects of valency (associative value representing the number of two-kanji words containing the first-positional kanji of the word) on recognition of two-kanji words in Japanese. Frequency and valency of the first constituent kanji were significant factors for word recognition, and frequency of the first constituent kanji was…
