Abraham, Michael R.; Renner, John W. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1986
Different learning cycle sequences were investigated to determine factors accounting for success of the cycle, compared learning with conventional instruction, and examined relationships between Piaget's theory and learning cycles. Results show that the normal learning cycle sequence is the optimum sequence for achievement of content knowledge in…

Joyce, Patrick; Merz, Thomas E. – Library Quarterly, 1985
Analysis of price discrimination (charging different prices to different customers for same product) for 89 academic journals in 6 disciplines reveals: incidence of price discrimination rose between 1974 and 1984, increase in mean institutional (library) subscription price exceeded increase in mean individual subscription price. Journal list…

Ratzlaff, Kenneth – Computers in Chemical Education Newsletter, 1984
The Apple game port has two types of inputs: the paddle input and the button input. Scientific applications of these input-output units are discussed, examining analog inputs (potentiometers, thermistors, and photoresistors), single bit digital inputs, and single-bit outputs. (JN)

Bobko, Edward – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1984
Discusses the role and activities of student tutors in an undergraduate organic chemistry course. Points out that such tutors must be used as a complement to the classroom lecturer, not as a substitute. (JN)

Pitt, Martin J. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Discusses six common problems which may occur when using temporary labels on chemicals, samples, or mixtures in teaching or research laboratories. Solutions to each of these problems are offered. (JN)

Wright, Norman A.; Blevins, Dennis D. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Describes a simplified method of preparing 35mm projection slides with a minimum of equipment and expertise. The quality of these slides compares favorably to professionally produced diazo slides. Twenty-five slides can easily be prepared in less than three hours. Material cost per slide is comparable to professional color slide processing. (JN)

Perez-Rodriguez, A. L.; Calvo-Aguilar, J. L. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Shows how the rate of reaction can be studied using a simple electronic device that overcomes the difficulty students encounter in solving the differential equations describing chemical equilibrium. The device, used in conjunction with an oscilloscope, supplies the voltages that represent the chemical variables that take part in the equilibrium.…

Staskiewicz, Bernard A.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1984
Describes an undergraduate polymer laboratory program in which the laboratory simulates an industrial organization. The goals of the program are to foster an understanding of the properties of polymers and how they change, their preparation, and industrial application. (JN)

Mott, Lawrie – Environmental Education Report and Newsletter, 1985
Extensive use of pesticides during food production has created concerns for certain involuntary risks. Examines these concerns: government role in control and monitoring pesticide use, proposals for reform, and how consumer awareness might be an effective pressure for finding remedies. A table listing produce and pesticide residues is included.…

Soukup, Rudolf W.; Schmid, Roland – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Although indicators are omnipresent tools in aqueous chemistry, they have not been used extensively to assign solvent properties in nonaqueous systems. Therefore, recent research into a system of metal complexes that can be used to assign donor and acceptor numbers to nonaqueous solvents is summarized. Pertinent experiments are also described. (JN)

Porter, Spencer K. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Matrix methods and oxidation-number methods are currently advocated and used for balancing equations. This article shows how balancing equations can be introduced by a third method which is related to a fundamental principle, is easy to learn, and is powerful in its application. (JN)

Schaeffer, Charles D., Jr.; Yoder, Claude H. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1985
Reports on a project used in a junior-level laboratory in which students prepare two alcohols, characterize these compounds, and use a shift reagent for structure determination and peak assignment. Background information, materials needed, procedures used, and typical results obtained are included. (JN)

Walter, Franklin B.; And Others – Science Education in Ohio, 1985
Reports on the certification qualifications for biology, chemistry, and physics teachers in Ohio. All teacher preparation institutions in the state are at or above the minimum state requirement in credit hours. Data indicate that low percentages (four to five percent) of Ohio teachers lack valid certificates for their science teaching assignments.…
