Hondebrink, Jan G. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1981
Some aspects of the reform of chemical education in the Netherlands are presented. These aspects include the reason for the reform and the results of the effort. Examples regarding the way entropy is treated and the treatment of quantitative chemical problems are given. (Author)

Campbell, J. Arthur; Bent, Henry A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1982
Suggestions are offered to illustrate concepts and processes by using simple materials such as paper, paper clip, rubber band (bonding, entropy, endothermic processes). Also suggests using basic terminology: elementary ratios, percent, reaction chemistry for entropy function; equilibrium constants for Gibbs energies; and chemical mechanics for…

Ambrogi, Angelica; Jenkins, Frank – Journal of Chemical Education, 1982
Two presentations at the 1981 International Conference on Chemical Education are summarized: (1) issues related to chemistry curriculum development in Brazil and (2) types of knowledge "sub-cultures" (for example, theorists, empirists, applicists, pedagogists, or epistemologists) would foster in chemistry curricula. Jackman, Lance E. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1982
Describes a modified Keller plan for teaching a biochemistry laboratory course and evaluates the method's effectiveness by comparing results of students using Keller plan (N=17) to students receiving traditional instruction (N=16). Results suggest the modified Keller plan is a successful instructional method for the course. (Author/SK)

De Toma, Francis J.; Campbell, Mary K. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1982
A one-semester biochemistry course was developed as an alternative to traditional freshman chemistry. Lecture topics and laboratory exercises focus on the course's unifying theme of the origin and early stages of the evolution of life on earth. (Author/SK)

Jackson, W. G.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1981
Describes kinetics experiments completed in a single two-hour laboratory period at 25 degrees Centigrade of nitrito to nitro rearrangement, based on the recently discovered base-catalysis path. Includes information on synthesis and characterization of linkage isomers, spectrophotometric techniques, and experimental procedures. (SK)

Chemical and Engineering News, 1981
Reports a shortage of doctorate-holding analytical chemists to meet demand in academic and industrial positions. Percentages are reported for annual production of analytical chemists since 1970. Innovative programs between academia and industry are needed to increase the total Ph.D. chemist production. (CS)
