Olson, Melfried; Olson, Judith – Teaching Children Mathematics, 2001
Presents responses to a problem that appeared in the May 2000 issue. The problem was to determine different ways to divide 8 cookies between 3 people. Includes student work from grades 1, 3, and 5. (KHR)

Sanchez, Victoria; Llinares, Salvador – Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education, 2003
Explores the influence of student teachers' subject matter knowledge on the process of pedagogical reasoning and the influence of images of mathematics, teaching, and learning on student teachers' organization of subject matter. Four student teachers differed in subject-matter knowledge both in aspects of concepts they emphasized and in the use of…

Galus, Pamela – Science Teacher, 2001
Using movie scenes about being trapped in quicksand as a starting point, this inquiry-oriented lesson engages students in a novel study of density. Students collect and graph data collected on a variety of objects placed in a mixture of sand and water. From their findings, students consider misconceptions about quicksand and its real dangers. (DLH)

Wainer, Howard – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1989
This paper reviews the role of the item in test construction, and suggests some new methods of item analysis. A look at dynamic, graphical item analysis is provided that uses the advantages of modern, high-speed, highly interactive computing. Several illustrations are provided. (Author/TJH)

Berg, Craig A.; Smith, Philip – Science Education, 1994
Describes studies designed to examine the instrumentation used to assess both graphing abilities and the impact of microcomputer-based laboratories (MBL) on students' graphing abilities. Results suggest that numerous disparities between the results of multiple-choice and free response instruments. The analysis also revealed that the impact of MBL…

Brungardt, John B.; Zollman, Dean – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1995
Investigation of (n=31) physics students' analysis of videodisc-recorded images with treatments over an extended time found no significant learning difference between using simultaneous-time and delayed-time analysis for student understanding of kinematics graphs. (Author/MKR)

Crestani, F.; Van Rijsbergen, C. J. – Journal of Documentation, 1995
Discusses the use of logical imaging in information retrieval. Topics include the use of nonclassical logic in information retrieval; imaging and possible worlds semantics; retrieval by imaging; evaluation processes; worlds mass and worlds distance; and future work. (LRW)

Hwang, Mark I. – Information Resources Management Journal, 1995
Describes research that empirically tested the effects of presentation format, time, pressure, and task complexity on decision performance. The objective was to determine the most effective presentation format (i.e., graphics or tables) for the performance of tasks of varying capabilities by decision makers under time pressure. (Author/LRW)

Ainley, Janet – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1995
Discusses children's use of spreadsheets and the access that this gives to the instantaneous production of a variety of graphs. (10 references) (MKR)

O'Neill, Edward T.; And Others – Library Resources and Technical Services, 1993
Describes an analysis of duplicate records in OCLC's Online Union Catalog. General and bibliographic characteristics of duplicate records are described; and reasons for duplicate records are discussed, including input errors, omission of relevant information, and differences in the interpretation of existing information. (five references) (LRW)

Arabie, Phipps – Psychometrika, 1991
The current state of multidimensional scaling using the city-block metric is reviewed, with attention to (1) substantive and theoretical issues; (2) recent algorithmic developments and their implications for analysis; (3) isometries with other metrics; (4) links to graph-theoretic models; and (5) prospects for future development. Zoski, Keith; Jurs, Stephen – Evaluation Review, 1991
The concerns about the use of a modified scree test in analyzing data from Delphi surveys may not be important if the scree test data are weighted. Factors important to the study can be incorporated into the test, and the ordinate on the graph can be labeled accordingly. (SLD)

Graney, John M. – System, 1992
Outlines an approach to text graphing through describing four types of graphs: sunburst, matrix, tree structure, and flow chart. The graphing types are then matched to 12 text types. Text graphing realizes the possibilities for enhancing instruction using insights provided by educational research in schema theory and metacognition. (15 references)…
