Uprichard, A. Edward; Engelhardt, Jon – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1986
Future research initiatives on learning and instruction are considered to be of most worth if grounded in general systems theory and if multiple research methods are used. Discussed are an information processing theory and a theory for the structure and structuring of stored information. (MNS)

Berlin, Donna; White, Arthur – School Science and Mathematics, 1986
This study investigated the effects of combining interactive microcomputer simulations and concrete activities on the development of abstract thinking in elementary school mathematics. Students in grades 2-4 were assessed on tasks involving designs and patterns. (MNS)

Bang-Jensen, Valerie – Instructor, 1987
Several winter activities and resources about winter activities are described for adaptation by teachers, regardless of the particular climate of the area. Included are descriptions of activities in language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, motor skills, and outdoor education. (CB)

Kaput, James J. – Journal of Mathematical Behavior, 1986
Examples of relatively novel computer software environments from the representation perspective are described. Even more novel approaches to curriculum reform to cultivate higher-order thinking skills are then discussed. (MNS)

Sommerfeld, Jude T. – Chemical Engineering Education, 1986
Summarizes a simple design algorithm which identifies nested loops of equations which must be solved by trial-and-error methods. The algorithm is designed to minimize such loops, provides guidance to the selection of variables, and delineates the order in which systems of equations are to be solved. Examples are included. (TW)

Fresko, Barbara; Ben-Chaim, David – Journal of Education for Teaching, 1986
Confidence in subject matter knowledge and in teaching ability, as well as actual subject matter competence of 157 grade 7-9 teachers were measured in order to assess the impact of an inservice course in mathematics instruction. Results are discussed. (Author/MT)

Hiatt, Arthur A. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1987
Ten activities that give learners in grades 5-8 a chance to explore mathematics with calculators are provided. The activity cards involve such topics as odd addends, magic squares, strange projects, and conjecturing rules. (MNS)

Rector, Robert E. – Mathematics Teacher, 1987
Game theory is appropriate as a topic for an honors seminar for high school students. Matrices provide a model for analyzing certain situations involving conflict, and probability theory can be used to determine the best strategies for the players. Variations on the ancient game of morra are discussed. (MNS)

Zepp, R.; And Others – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1987
A test of logic using implicational and disjunctive sentences was given to Chinese and English speakers. No differences were found on "if-then" sentences, but differences were found on "or" sentences. (MNS)

Harvey, John G.; Bright, George W. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1985
After presenting the case for using games to teach higher-level skills, four mathematics instructional games are given. At the comprehension level are Average Hands and Polyhedron Rummy. Prime Plus is at the application level, while In Proportion is at the analysis level. (MNS)

Brown, John Seely – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1985
Exploration of concepts crucial to development of new computer-based learning environments focuses on process rather than product and the computer's ability to record, represent, and communicate the underlying process. Cognitive, pedagogical, and sociological issues relevant to creation of learning environments in five domains (empowering…

Hiebert, James – Education and Urban Society, 1985
Many elementary and junior high school students do not become proficient with common and decimal fractions because they have established few connections between the form they learn in the classroom and understandings they already have. (Author/GC)

Lovitt, Charles; And Others – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1985
Accompanying curriculum renewal efforts in Australia is the need of teachers to increase their repertoire of skills. Strategies supporting the process of change are discussed, including developing a bank of exemplary lessons and a structured environment for testing such lessons. Three examples of school projects are described. (MNS)
