Horn, J. L. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1972
A general theoretical rationale is outlined for identifying different kinds of traits, states and function fluctuations of intelligence, providing a basis for developing a set of mathematical procedures which would allow for some separation of traits and states, both seen as patterns of distinct but covarying processes. (Author/MB)

Redlich, Otto – Journal of Chemical Education, 1972
The foundation of science, and of thermodynamics in particular, can be developed cogently and without arbitrariness. The goal of science, description of nature, is externally given; it requires a set of basic concepts as indispensable tools. Mathematics has no similar externally given goal. (Author/TS)

Fensham, P. J.; Davison, D. M. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1972
As part of their teacher training course, graduate students visited several industries to find what mathematics was in use. (MM)

Lighthill, M. J. – Mathematical Gazette, 1971
This article (the 1971 Presidential Address to the Mathematical Association of U. K.) makes a plea that college teachers of mathematics should be better aware of the applications of mathematics in other subjects. As an example, the author describes the use of differential equations to solve certain vibrational problems in mechanical engineering.…

Baker, J. E. – Mathematics Teaching, 1971
A discussion of the relation between traffic density, speed and flow, used as an illustration of the ideas of functions and mathematical models. (MM)

McConnell, John W. – School Science and Mathematics, 1971
Examines the model of interacting nerve systems based on a switching theory, which uses a mathematical structure familiar to many high school students and requires little knowledge of biology. Reviews the basic operation of nerves, and demonstrates how Boolean algebraic statements are applied to synaptic interactions. (PR)

Gabai, Hyman – Mathematics Teacher, 1982
Korean secondary school students preparing for college learn about a simple algebraic formula for area bounded by a parabola and line. The approach does not seem well-known among American students. It is noted that, while the formula derivations rely on integration, algebra students could use the formulas without proofs. (MP)

Teixeira-Dias, Jose J. C. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1983
Shows how a statistical approach can help students accept postulates of quantum mechanics. The approach, which also makes students aware of the philosophical/humanistic implications of quantum mechanics, involves the following sequence: (1) important experiments in quantum mechanics; (2) conventional statistical interpretation; (3) mathematical…

A diffusion simulation is described in which the dispersion of potato beetles in a given problem is traced on hexagonal grids. (MNS)
