Borreggine, Kristin L.; Kaschak, Michael P. – Cognitive Science, 2006
When participants are asked to make sensibility judgments on sentences that describe action toward the body (i.e., "Mark dealt the cards to you") or away from the body (i.e., "You dealt the cards to Mark"), they are faster to respond when the response requires an arm movement in the same direction as the action described by the sentence. This…

Peer reviewedWarnke, Molly M.; Erickson, Angela E.; Smith, Eugene T. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2005
A forensic project is described that is suitable for an undergraduate instrumental methods lab. Accelerants commonly used by arsonists are analyzed by static headspace enrichment followed by gas chromatography. The conditions used for headspace enrichment (e.g., time and temperature) are known to influence the distribution of hydrocarbons…

Peer reviewedSilberman, Robert G. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
In order to find the right combination to construct a cold pack for athletic injuries, students mix liquids and solids in a calorimeter, and use a thermometer to ascertain whether the chemical reaction is hot or cold. Many formulae for chemical reactions are given, the first of which is used for commercial cold packs.

Peer reviewedPandita, Sangeeta; Goyal, Samta; Passey, Sarita – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
A successful microscale fusion of semicarbazones, or transformation of carbonyl compounds into semicarbazones is performed through an effective grinding system. The donning of protective attire is advised to avoid the hazardous effects of semicarbazide hydrochloride during the fusion process.

Peer reviewedLykos, Peter – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The structure of a hydrogen bond is elucidated within the framework of molecular dynamics based on the model of Rahman and Stillinger (R-S) liquid water treatment. Thus, undergraduates are exposed to the powerful but simple use of classical mechanics to solid objects from a molecular viewpoint.

Peer reviewedYoung, Jay A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The hazards of silver used in the laboratories are described for the benefit of the students and the teachers. The exposure limits and symptoms due to acute exposures are also mentioned.

Peer reviewedYoung, Jay A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The hazards caused by calcium used in the laboratories are described. The exposure limits and symptoms of acute exposures are mentioned.

Peer reviewedHernandez-Benito, Jesus; Garcia-Santos, M. Pilar; O'Brein, Emma; Calle, Emilio; Casado, Julio – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
A practical approach for familiarizing students with the thermodynamics of the inclusion phenomena is described. The experiment facilitates calculation of the activation parameters corresponding to the reactions involved in the inclusion mechanism.

Peer reviewedMargel, Hannah; Eylon, Bat-Sheva; Scherz, Zahava – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The feasibility and the potential contribution of the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in junior high school (JHS) as an instructional tool for learning the particulate nature of matter is described. The use and power of new technologies can probably be demonstrated by the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).

Peer reviewedGiancarlo, Leanna C.; Slunt, Kelli M. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
A real-life experience that provides an ideal opportunity to combine problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and collaborative learning is described in the content of a realistic instrumental analysis laboratory. This practical experiment can be used in an instrumental analysis or analytical course.
Descriptors: Cooperative Learning, Chemistry, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving
Peer reviewedMason, Diana S. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
An attempt was made to state the problems and find solutions as to how practical laboratory experience can contribute to meaningful learning. It is observed that laboratory experience is one of the most important requirements for connecting students' appreciation of chemistry with the world in which they reside.

Peer reviewedWhelan, Rebecca J.; Hannon, Theresa E.; Zare, Richard N. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The use of ion chromatography (IC) as a means to teach important analytical concepts while giving the students a valuable opportunity to identify and investigate a real-world system of interest to them is described. A single IC apparatus can be tailored for different classes of analyses by the selection of different column-eluent combinations.

Peer reviewedNicholson, John W.; Wilson, Alan D. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2004
The conversion of carboxylic acids to ketones is a useful chemical transformation with a long history. Several chemists have claimed that they discovered the conversion of carboxylic acids to ketones yet in fact the reaction is actually known for centuries.

Abdulkader, Fernando; Azevedo-Martins, Anna Karenina; de Arcisio Miranda, Manoel; Brunaldi, Kellen – Advances in Physiology Education, 2005
An important challenge for both students and teachers of physiology is to integrate the differentareas in which physiological knowledge is didactically divided. In developing countries, such an issue is even more demanding, because budget restrictions often affect the physiology program with laboratory classes being the first on the list when it…

Bell, Philip – Educational Psychologist, 2004
Over the past decade, design experimentation has become an increasingly accepted mode of research appropriate for the theoretical and empirical study of learning amidst complex educational interventions as they are enacted in everyday settings. There is still a significant lack of clarity surrounding methodological and epistemological features of…
