Erlichson, Herman – Physics Teacher, 1975
Descriptors: College Science, Electricity, Higher Education, Instruction
Peer reviewed Peer reviewed
Goldberg, Fred M. – Physics Teacher, 1975
Describes an out-of-doors, partially unstructured experiment to determine the coefficient of friction for a moving car. Presents the equation which relates the coefficient of friction to initial velocity, distance, and time and gives sample computed values as a function of initial speed and tire pressure. (GS)

Adams, J. M. – Education in Chemistry, 1975
Describes the macroscopic process of the swelling of clay by adding water, and the corresponding microscopic process of water molecules entering the spacings between clay crystals. Discusses how the Bragg equation can be used together with other physical data to calculate these spacings. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education, Instructional Materials

Horak, V.; Crist, DeLanson R. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Discusses the advantages of using small scale experimentation in the undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory. Describes small scale filtration techniques as an example of a semi-micro method applied to small quantities of material. (MLH)

Potter, Frederick S.; Schuerch, Conrad – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Describes an undergraduate chemistry experiment which demonstrates the use of codistillation for the separation of substances of low volatility from nonvolatiles. Pine gum is separated into turpentine and rosin by means of codistillation with steam at temperatures above 100 degrees centigrade. (MLH)

Demas, J. N. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Describes an undergraduate physical chemistry experiment in which a low cost spectrofluorimeter is used to carry out elementary emission measurements on a transition metal complex. The students measure uncorrected emission and excitation spectra, and determine the rate constant for an exceedingly fast bimolecular reaction, the deactivation of an…

Fox, John N.; McMaster, Richard H. – American Journal of Physics, 1975
An undergraduate experiment is described which employs a relaxation method for the measurement of the thermal conductivity and specific heat of a metallic sample in a temperature range of 0-100 degrees centigrade. (Author/CP)

Gross, Michael L.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Isomeric ketones containing six or seven carbons are separated, illustrating the capability of chemical instrumentation for separating a group of closely related compounds. (MLH)

Atkins, Robert C. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Describes an experiment in which the iron content of a commercial vitamin tablet is determined by comparing its visible spectrum to the visible spectrum of a standardized iron solution. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemical Analysis, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education
Foster, Constance B. – Rutgers-Camden Law Journal, 1975
The court held in Kaimowitz v. Department of Mental Health that "involuntarily detained mental patients cannot give informed and adequate consent to experimental psychosurgical procedures on the brain." This note argues that the present theory of informed consent is inadequate for such cases and proposes a new theory. (JT)

Wolf, Walter A., Ed. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1975
Five brief items are discussed. They include (1) preservation of reactive ions in solid solution, (2) the molecular partition function, (3) purification of methoxychlor, (4) a kinetics experiment, and (5) determining molecular weights of acids. (RWH)
