Niewahner, J. H.; Walters, Keith A.; Wagner, Ashley – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
The three-step synthesis of Geodken's macrocycle, H[subscript 2]C[subscript 22]H[subscript 22]N[subscript 4], (5,14-dihydro-6,8,15,17-tetramethyldibenzo[b,i]-[1,4,8,11] tetraazacyclotetradecahexane), in an overall yield of 65% is described. By utilizing the synthesis of the macrocycle's dichloride salt, H[subscript 2]C[subscript 22]H[subscript…

Martin, Eric; Kellen-Yuen, Cynthia – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
A greener, microwave-assisted Wittig reaction has been developed for the second-semester organic teaching laboratory. Utilizing this microwave technique, a variety of styrene derivatives have been successfully synthesized from aromatic aldehydes in good yields (41-68%). The reaction not only occurs under neat reaction conditions, but also employs…

Blankespoor, Ronald L.; Hogendoorn, Stephanie; Pearson, Andrea – Journal of Chemical Education, 2007
The reactivity and orientation effects of a substituent are analyzed by using HPLC to determine the competitive nitration of the benzene-toluene and benzene-fluorobenzene mixtures. The results have shown that HPLC is an excellent instrumental method to use in analyzing these mixtures.

Perry, Jamie; Kuehn, David; Langlois, Rick – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2007
Learning real three-dimensional (3D) anatomy for the first time can be challenging. Two-dimensional drawings and plastic models tend to over-simplify the complexity of anatomy. The approach described uses stereoscopy to create 3D images of the process of cadaver dissection and to demonstrate the underlying anatomy related to the speech mechanisms.…

Shure, Gerald H.; And Others – Simulation and Games, 1975
This paper describes a computer model that simulates experimental outcome data obtained by the manipulation of 13 independent variables reported in studies investigating the group risky shift. The model is intended as a tool for teaching research methods in an undergraduate course in social psychology. (Author)
