Peer reviewedAkker, Evelien; Cutler, Anne – Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, 2003
Examines whether listeners efficiently exploit sentence prosody to direct attention to words bearing sentence accent. Four studies are reported. Results suggest that less efficient mapping of prosody to semantics may be one way in which nonnative listening fails to equal native listening. (Author/VWL)

Peer reviewedWilkinson, Krista M.; Mazzitelli, Kim – Journal of Child Language, 2003
Explores "fast mapping," one of several processes that have been proposed to be involved in the rapid vocabulary expansion observed in the preschool years. An adaptation of a receptive word matching task examined how well children retained just-mapped relation between word and referent when some information was later missing. (Author/VWL)

Peer reviewedDay, Bryon; Matthes, William – Journal for Specialists in Group Work, 1992
Compares Jungian approach to personal growth groups to Person-centered and Gestalt approaches. Notes similarities, though Jungian approach adds dimension of "cognitive map" not found in other two. Notes that cognitive map uses constructs from Jung's theory of individuation process, hypothesizing that integration of these constructs into…

Peer reviewedBaldwin, Dare A. – Child Development, 1991
Labels for toys were taught to 64 infants. In follow-in labeling, the experimenter labeled a toy at which infants were looking; in discrepant labeling, one at which they were not looking. Results revealed that infants learned follow-in labels and made no mapping errors after discrepant labeling. (BC)

Bordin, Judith – Journal of Cooperation & Collaboration in College Teaching, 2000
Asserting that cognitive maps can serve as a technique to review course readings in a small group format and allow students to both become familiar with course content and learn group processes. A sample map and evaluation sheet are also provided. (EV)

Peer reviewedKerrin, Maire; Hone, Kate – New Technology, Work and Employment, 2001
College students (n=40) and nonstudent job seekers (n=20) rated four dimensions of telework. Results were plotted in cognitive maps. Students preferred office work to telework, citing lack of social interaction. Nonstudents, slightly older and more likely to be parents, slightly preferred telework. Targeting recruitment to account for these…

Fournier, Lisa R.; Herbert, Rhonda J.; Farris, Carrie – Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 2004
This study examined how response mapping of features within single- and multiple-feature targets affects decision-based processing and attentional capacity demands. Observers judged the presence or absence of 1 or 2 target features within an object either presented alone or with distractors. Judging the presence of 2 features relative to the less…

Awh, Edward; Sgarlata, Antoinette Marie; Kliestik, John – Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 2005
Models of attentional control usually describe online shifts in control settings that accommodate changing task demands. The current studies suggest that online control over distractor exclusion--a core component of visual selection--can be accomplished without online shifts in top-down settings. Measurements of target discrimination accuracy…

Kuhtz, Silvana – International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education, 2007
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate issues and concerns associated with sustainable development SD in Italy for different stakeholders, with a focus on the role of education. Cognitive maps for 49 individuals living in Italy have been developed and their differences analyzed and discussed with the aim of designing a seminar to…

Jonassen, David H.; And Others – 1990
Diagrams showing the components of structural knowledge and the theoretical basis for structural knowledge introduce four tables presenting information on: (1) implicit strategies for conveying cognitive structure, including content/structures signalling (Meyer), frames/slots (Armbruster and Anderson), and Elaboration Theory (Reigeluth and…

Peer reviewedGaver, W. W. – Human-Computer Interaction, 1987
An appoach to the use of sound in computer interfaces, proposed in this article, emphasizes the role of sound in conveying information about the world to the listener. This approach argues that auditory icons, i.e., caricatures of naturally occurring sounds, provide a natural way to represent dimensional data as well as conceptual objects in a…

Peer reviewedCohen, David – Journal of Curriculum and Supervision, 1987
Although exploring students' thought processes can be rewarding, most teachers rely heavily on reponses to tests and assignments that fail to disclose learners' thinking patterns. Concept maps grouping interrelated ideas can encourage students to demonstrate effective and meaningful assimilation of organized study areas. Includes five footnotes.…

Peer reviewedCromley, Robert G.; Cromley, Ellen K. – Journal of Geography, 1986
Defines cognitive mapping and describes an exercise that adapts methods applied by geographers conducting advanced research in environmental cognition in order to help students think about their perceptions of the spatial organization of a well-known environment. Instructor's and students' tasks are identified and sample handouts are included.…

Peer reviewedLepper, Tammy Swenson – Electronic Journal of Communication/La Revue Electronique de Communication, 1996
Describes the development of the concept of ethical sensitivity in the field of cognitive moral psychology. Peer reviewedWilkinson, Krista M.; McIlvane, William J. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1997
Examined a blank comparison method for evaluating emergent symbol mapping and learning of new word: picture matching relations by 3- to 5-year olds. Found that the method had considerable promise for advancing theoretical analyses of emergent mapping in behavior analytic and developmental language research. (KB)
