Lynch, P. P. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1978
Establishes the extent to which practical work in South African high schools varies with respect to factors such as gender of student, type of school, medium of instruction, and examination board. Investigates the relationship between experience of experimental work and pupil attainment as measured by matriculation grade. (Author/GA)

Baca, Glenn; Lewis, Dennis A. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1978
This experiment uses a nine-chambered plexiglas unit to facilitate rapid construction of galvanic cells and measurement of cell voltage. Using this procedure, a pair of students can construct and obtain the cell voltages of two precipitation cells, three concentration cells, and six redox cells in 30-40 minutes. (BB)

Millikan, Roger C. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1978
The observation of soap bubbles in a beaker of carbon dioxide gas helps students to feel the pleasure that comes from understanding nature, from applying that understanding to real problems, and from making unexpected discoveries that yield to analysis. (Author/BB)

Nereu, Jose Francisco – Prospects: Quarterly Review of Education, 1977
Describes the "Packaging Useful to Schools Campaign," a one year experiment in providing free instructional materials to primary schools in Portugal. Materials such as maps, clock faces, detachable letters, rulers, protractors, and compass cards were printed by manufacturers on their packaging materials and were later recycled to…

Sovik, Nils – Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, 1977
As the principle of integration instead of segregation has become dominant in the planning and organization of the Norwegian school (1st to 9th grade), different kinds of individualized instruction have been recommended to the teachers to use. This study investigates whether, and to what extent, an experimental program of individualized…

Mitroff, Ian; Bonoma, Thomas V. – Evaluation Quarterly, 1978
The decisive power of an experiment, for both social evaluation research and laboratory experimentation as well, is only as strong as the clarity of the basic assumptions which underlie it. A dialectical methodology is proposed for assessing the influence of key assumptions in both settings. (Author/CTM)
Descriptors: Conceptual Schemes, Error Patterns, Evaluation, Experiments
Fortner, Rosanne W. – Sea World, 1978
Describes a series of science activities involving dissection and analysis of a sea necklace. (CP)

Driver, H. S. T. – American Journal of Physics, 1978
Describes an experiment for the measurement of the reflectances of dielectric surface. The experiment is analyzed in terms of the Stokes parameters and the Mueller calculus, and Malus law is derived. The experiment also provides an introduction to the properties of real linear polarizers. (Author/GA)

Cohen, D. K.; Potts, J. E. – American Journal of Physics, 1978
Describes an experiment in which a point source of light, when viewed through a cylindrical tube having reflecting inner walls, appears as a series of sharply defined rings, due to the multiple reflections from the inner walls of the tube. ( GA)

Ouseph, P. J.; DuBard, James L. – American Journal of Physics, 1978
Shows that when positions annihilate in solid materials the energy distribution of the annihilation gamma rays is much broader than that of a 0.511-Mev gamma peak. This broadening is caused by the momentum distribution of the electrons in the material. (Author/GA)

McKechnie, J. S.; And Others – Journal of Chemical Education, 1978
Describes the preparation of suitable solid electrolytes and cells which may form the basis of a laboratory teaching program designed to illustrate a variety of electrochemical ideas. ( Author/CP)

Potter, Larry; Brown, Bruce – Journal of Chemical Education, 1978
Reports on a computer batch program that will not only perform routine grading using several grading algorithms, but will also calculate various statistical measures by which the class performance can be evaluated and cumulative data collected. ( Author/CP)

Schatz, Paul F. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1978
Describes a synthesis of chrysanthemic acid which has been used successfully in a laboratory course. (Author/CP)

Ophardt, Charles E. – Journal of Chemical Education, 1978
Reports on an undergraduate laboratory course designed to provide instruction and practice in the intellectual skills of application, analysis, and synthesis, and in Piaget's formal operations. A 10-item exam used to measure these skills is included as an appendix. (Author/CP)
