Peer reviewedDe Ayala, R. J.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1991
To investigate the effect on item parameter estimation of pooling the raters' ratings and to examine the information content of 2 types of writing samples, the partial credit model was fit to 2,000 writing samples from secondary students that had been holistically scored. Implications for test construction are discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Estimation (Mathematics), Graphs, Holistic Evaluation, Mathematical Models
Peer reviewedGradnauer, Tom – Perspectives in Education and Deafness, 1993
This article describes a social studies project for deaf students, which used the search for information concerning people with deafness to develop student skills in creating and interpreting various kinds of charts and graphs. (DB)
Descriptors: Charts, Deafness, Graphs, Information Sources
Peer reviewedCibes, Margaret – Mathematics Teacher, 1993
Proposes that state legislatures are a laboratory for mathematics. Discusses the mathematics involved in the three income tax proposals submitted to the Connecticut General Assembly in 1991 and the effects that each plan would have on families. The proposals included a flat rate plan, a graduated rate plan, and a compromise proposal. (MDH)
Descriptors: Finance Reform, Graphs, Mathematical Applications, Mathematics Education
Peer reviewedKelly, James D. – Journalism Quarterly, 1993
Tests the effects of number of data points and type of statistical display on time spent answering questions about information. Finds that tables and graphs are more efficiently processed than text presentation of the same data. Suggests that the time variable is a more realistic measure than information recall of cognitive processing effort. (SR)
Descriptors: Graphs, Higher Education, Readability, Reading Comprehension
Peer reviewedHardy, Charles – New England Journal of History, 1992
Describes the use of Charles Minard's graphic of Napoleon's 1812 Russian Campaign as an instructional tool in history classes. Maintains that the graphic, created in 1861, can be analyzed by students to determine six historical and geographical factors involved in Napoleon's defeat. Includes a copy of Minard's graphic. (CFR)
Descriptors: European History, Foreign Countries, Geography Instruction, Graphs
Peer reviewedChatterjee, Sangit; Yilmaz, Mustafa – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1992
The importance of regression diagnostics in detecting influential data points is discussed, and five statistics are recommended for the applied researcher. The suggested diagnostics were used on a dataset of 24 subjects, and effects were analyzed. Colinearity-based diagnostics and diagnostics for a variety of procedures are discussed. (SLD)
Descriptors: Behavioral Science Research, Diagnostic Tests, Equations (Mathematics), Error of Measurement
Peer reviewedGray, Gerald J.; Ellefson, Paul V. – Evaluation Review, 1991
Evaluation of strategic planning programs is illustrated using the examples of statewide forest resource planning programs implemented by state governments in 1986. Client-based perspectives were studied via a survey of 216 officials affected by the forestry planning program. Considering planning's context, process, outputs, and performance helped…

Peer reviewedChiu, Chi-Kwan; Alliger, George M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1990
A method is proposed to combine a relative approach and an absolute approach to performance appraisal by combining graphic rating and ranking. Two studies involving 196 college undergraduates who rated their instructors illustrate the promise offered by the proposed Qualitative Ranking Scale. (SLD)
Descriptors: Evaluation Methods, Graphs, Higher Education, Performance
Peer reviewedLewis, Charles; Sheehan, Kathleen – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
A theoretical framework for mastery testing based on item response theory and Bayesian decision theory is described and illustrated. Implementation depends on the availability of (1) a computerized test delivery system; (2) a pool of pretested items; and (3) a model relating observed test performance to true mastery status. (SLD)
Descriptors: Bayesian Statistics, Computer Assisted Testing, Equations (Mathematics), Graphs
May, Lola J. – Teaching Pre K-8, 1994
Discusses how grocery shopping activities can help primary and intermediate grade students develop mathematics skills useful in real life. (BB)
Descriptors: Class Activities, Data Collection, Elementary Education, Estimation (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedJackson, David F.; And Others – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1993
Describes a project where computer-assisted graphical data analyses were introduced to inner-city high school students with weak math and science backgrounds. Provides examples of performance of students on open-ended problem-solving tasks. (PR)
Descriptors: Computer Assisted Instruction, Data Analysis, Graphs, High Schools
Peer reviewedFeicht, Louis – Mathematics Teacher, 1999
Provides a lesson that focuses on three-dimensional graphing, contours, and topographical maps using computer spreadsheets. (ASK)
Descriptors: Computer Graphics, Computer Uses in Education, Educational Technology, Graphs
Peer reviewedCalvin, Scott – Physics Teacher, 1999
Features an assignment involving average monthly temperatures that can serve as an example of curve-fitting for a periodic function. (WRM)
Descriptors: Functions (Mathematics), Graphs, High Schools, Higher Education
Peer reviewedThomas, David A.; Thomas, Rex A. – Mathematics Teacher, 1999
Describes one teacher's effort to change the classroom environment in order to create student-directed exploratory learning. Presents a lesson in which students use the computer program Lesson Graph to study the effects of coefficients on linear equations. (ASK)
Descriptors: Algebra, Computer Software, Computer Uses in Education, Equations (Mathematics)
Peer reviewedCanderle, Luis H. – Physics Teacher, 1999
Proposes that introductory physics courses extend the analysis of one-dimensional motion to a more sophisticated level. Gives four experimental setups and graphical analysis of the distance, velocity, and acceleration in the vertical and horizontal directions. (WRM)
Descriptors: Acceleration (Physics), Graphs, Higher Education, Kinetics
