Chakrabarti, Bhupati; Pathare, Shirish; Huli, Saurabhee; Nachane, Madhura – Physics Education, 2013
An experiment with a mechanical black box containing unknown masses is presented. The experiment involves the determination of these masses and their locations by performing some nondestructive tests. The set-ups are inexpensive and easy to fabricate. They are very useful to gain an understanding of some well-known principles of mechanics.

Karls, Michael A. – PRIMUS, 2013
The wave equation with variable tension is a classic partial differential equation that can be used to describe the horizontal displacements of a vertical hanging chain with one end fixed and the other end free to move. Using a web camera and TRACKER software to record displacement data from a vibrating hanging chain, we verify a modified version…

Higbie, J. – Physics Teacher, 2013
We have frequently enhanced our department's laboratory experiment involving standing transverse waves in a taut horizontal cord. In addition to the standard experiment, students in these labs investigate the surprising concept that the acceleration of a pulse in a chain hanging vertically is a constant and is equal to half the acceleration…

Puglisi, Jose L.; Negroni, Jorge A.; Chen-Izu, Ye; Bers, Donald M. – Advances in Physiology Education, 2013
The force-frequency relationship has intrigued researchers since its discovery by Bowditch in 1871. Many attempts have been made to construct mathematical descriptions of this phenomenon, beginning with the simple formulation of Koch-Wesser and Blinks in 1963 to the most sophisticated ones of today. This property of cardiac muscle is amplified by…

Drummond, Gordon B.; Vowler, Sarah L. – Advances in Physiology Education, 2013
This final article in the authors' series draws together some of the ideas they have addressed, and suggests important "ingredients" that make a paper palatable to the reviewer and the reader. These ingredients include: (1) Describe the methods; (2) Plan the analysis; (3) Design the study; (4) Use the correct experimental unit; and (5)…

Porte, Graeme – CALICO Journal, 2013
In this paper, the editor of a recent Cambridge University Press book on research methods discusses replicating previous key studies to throw more light on their reliability and generalizability. Replication research is presented as an accepted method of validating previous research by providing comparability between the original and replicated…

Charlton, Michael; Eriksson, Stefan; Isaac, C. Aled; Madsen, Niels; van der Werf, Dirk Peter – Physics Education, 2013
We describe recent experiments at CERN in which antihydrogen, an atom
made entirely of antimatter, has been held in a magnetic minimum neutral
atom trap and subjected to microwave radiation to induce a resonant
quantum transition in the anti-atom. We discuss how this, the first
experiment to observe an interaction between an antihydrogen atom and…

Yildirim, Ilker; Jacobs, Robert A. – Cognition, 2013
We study people's abilities to transfer object category knowledge across visual and haptic domains. If a person learns to categorize objects based on inputs from one sensory modality, can the person categorize these same objects when the objects are perceived through another modality? Can the person categorize novel objects from the same…

Trovato, Sara – Sign Language Studies, 2013
Is the right to sign language only the right to a minority language? Holding a capability (not a disability) approach, and building on the psycholinguistic literature on sign language acquisition, I make the point that this right is of a stronger nature, since only sign languages can guarantee that each deaf child will properly develop the…

Eckelmann, Jens; Luning, Ulrich – Journal of Chemical Education, 2013
Two demonstrations are presented that show the immiscibility of five or six
layers of liquids. The setup of both demonstrations is such that one homogeneous layer in a multiphasic mixture separates into two new layers upon shaking. The solvents used are methanol, toluene, petroleum ether or "n"-pentane, silicone oil, perfluoroheptanes,…

Zhang, Guyu – ProQuest LLC, 2013
This dissertation presents a study of an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) navigation and coverage hole patching in coordinate-free and localization-free Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Navigation and coverage maintenance are related problems since coverage hole patching requires effective navigation in the sensor network environment. A…

Walsh, Rosalind L.; Kemp, Coral – Gifted Child Quarterly, 2013
Single-subject experimental designs have long been used in special education to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for exceptional children. However, the design has not been used widely in gifted education. In this article, an overview of the main features of single-subject design is presented, and its potential for application in gifted…

Rodicio, Hector Garcia; Sanchez, Emilio; Acuna, Santiago R. – Instructional Science: An International Journal of the Learning Sciences, 2013
Acquiring complex conceptual knowledge requires learners to self-regulate their learning by planning, monitoring, and adjusting the process but they find it difficult to do so. In one experiment, we examined whether learners need broad systems of support for self-regulation or whether they are also able to learn with more economical support…

Martinez-Roman, Javier; Perez-Cruz, Juan; Pineda-Sanchez, Manuel; Puche-Panadero, Ruben; Roger-Folch, Jose; Riera-Guasp, Martin; Sapena-Baño, Angel – IEEE Transactions on Education, 2015
Undergraduate courses in electrical machines often include an introduction to their magnetic circuits and to the various magnetic materials used in their construction and their properties. The students must learn to be able to recognize and compare the permeability, saturation, and losses of these magnetic materials, relate each material to its…

Yaman, Hakan – Educational Sciences: Theory and Practice, 2015
The purpose of this research is to examine the number sense performance of the classroom teacher candidates taking the Mathematics Education I and II courses. Moreover, it investigates whether there is a change in the number sense performance of the teacher candidates following the Mathematics Education I and II courses. Embedded experimental…
