Commandeur, Jacques J. F.; Groenen, Patrick J. F.; Meulman, Jacqueline J. – Psychometrika, 1999
Presents two methods for including weights in distance-based nonlinear multivariate data analysis. One method assigns weights to the objects, while the other is concerned with differential weighing of groups of variables. Discusses applications of these weighting schemes and proposed an algorithm to minimize the corresponding loss function. (SLD)

Ferrando, Pere J.; Lorenzo-Seva, Urbano – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1999
Describes the implementation of a standard Pearson chi-square statistic to test the null hypothesis of bivariate normality for latent variables in the Type I censored model. Assesses the behavior of the statistic through simulation and illustrates the statistic through an empirical example. Discusses limitations of the test. (Author/SLD)

Campbell, Kathleen T.; Taylor, Dianne L. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1996
A hypothesized data set is used to illustrate that canonical correlation analysis is a general linear model, subsuming other parametric procedures as special cases. Specific techniques included in analyses are t tests, Pearson correlation, multiple regression, analysis of variance, multivariate analysis of variance, and discriminant analysis. (SLD)

De Corte, Wilfried – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 2000
Shows how a theorem proven by H. Brogden (1951, 1959) can be used to estimate the allocation average (a predictor based classification of a test battery) assuming that the predictor intercorrelations and validities are known and that the predictor variables have a joint multivariate normal distribution. (SLD)

Toriello, Paul J.; Leierer, Stephen J. – Rehabilitation Counseling Bulletin, 2005
In this study, the authors examined the relationship between the clinical orientations of substance abuse professionals (SAPs) and their clinical decisions. Cluster analysis grouped a sample of 245 SAPs on two clinical orientations that differed in their relative endorsement of traditional versus contemporary substance abuse counseling processes…

Dixon, Felicia A.; Lapsley, Daniel K.; Hanchon, Timothy A. – Gifted Child Quarterly, 2004
We document a typology of perfectionism in a sample of academically talented adolescents and directly examine its relationship to indices of psychiatric symptomatology, adjustment, self-esteem, and coping. Adolescents enrolled in a state-funded residential academy for academically gifted high school students (N = 141) responded to the…

Bauer, Daniel J. – Structural Equation Modeling: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2005
To date, finite mixtures of structural equation models (SEMMs) have been developed and applied almost exclusively for the purpose of providing model-based cluster analyses. This type of analysis constitutes a direct application of the model wherein the estimated component distributions of the latent classes are thought to represent the…

Lubke, Gitta H.; Muthen, Bengt O. – Structural Equation Modeling, 2004
Treating Likert rating scale data as continuous outcomes in confirmatory factor analysis violates the assumption of multivariate normality. Given certain requirements pertaining to the number of categories, skewness, size of the factor loadings, and so forth, it seems nevertheless possible to recover true parameter values if the data stem from a…

Hodges, K.; Xue, Y.; Wotring, J. – Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, 2004
The authors report outcomes for 4,777 youth served by the public mental health system in Michigan who had problems in school, at home, in interpersonal relationships, or in modulating their mood. Cluster analysis identified five subgroups: Pervasive Problems with Mood Disturbance (i.e., severe or moderate impairment in school, at home, in behavior…

Miyazaki, Yasuo; Maier, Kimberly S. – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 2005
In hierarchical linear models we often find that group indicator variables at the cluster level are significant predictors for the regression slopes. When this is the case, the average relationship between the outcome and a key independent variable are different from group to group. In these settings, a question such as "what range of the…

Tekwe, Carmen D.; Carter, Randy L.; Ma, Chang-Xing; Algina, James; Lucas, Maurice E.; Roth, Jeffrey; Ariet, Mario; Fisher, Thomas; Resnick, Michael B. – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 2004
Hierarchical Linear Models (HLM) have been used extensively for value-added analysis, adjusting for important student and school-level covariates such as socioeconomic status. A recently proposed alternative, the Layered Mixed Effects Model (LMEM) also analyzes learning gains, but ignores sociodemographic factors. Other features of LMEM, such as…

van der Geest, Victor; Blokland, Arjan; Bijleveld, Catrien – Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, 2009
The authors analyzed delinquent development from age 12 to 32 in 270 male offenders who underwent residential treatment for problematic behavior and delinquency in a Dutch juvenile justice institution. Stable personality and background characteristics were measured on admission. The development of offending was examined on the basis of conviction…
