Shapira, Zur; Zevulun, Eli – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1989
Data from four studies were used to analyze the hypothesis that performance evaluation variables can be constructed with a rater's facet and a trait's facet. The regularity of the pattern of intercorrelations across different rater groups was remarkable. The use of facet analysis before confirmatory analysis is discussed. (SLD)

Turkheimer, Eric; And Others – Human Development, 1995
Recognizes some of the limitations of the field of behavioral genetics, but argues that the methods employed in multivariate behavior genetics and developmental behavior genetics have become the dominant paradigms in the field. (MDM)

Rosen, Monica – Learning and Instruction, 1995
Gender differences in cognitive abilities were studied in 1,224 13-year olds using a multivariate latent variables approach. No gender differences were found in the structure of cognitive abilities, but mean differences in favor of females were found for general intelligence, with higher means for males on most spatial dimensions. (SLD)

Wood, Phillip Karl; Games, Paul – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1990
Conceptual rationales from five research contexts are presented, which all posit unmeasured variables that interact with observed independent variables to produce a complete model of the dependent variable. Strategies for overcoming related difficulties are outlined, including increased longitudinal assessment, oversampling of levels of…

Cohen, Jacob; Nee, John C. M. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1990
The analysis of contingency tables via set correlation allows the assessment of subhypotheses involving contrast functions of the categories of the nominal scales. The robustness of such methods with regard to Type I error and statistical power was studied via a Monte Carlo experiment. (TJH)

Huberty, Carl J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1994
Purposes of multivariate analyses are discussed, focusing on the primary purposes of prediction and structure identification and the secondary purpose of response variable ordering. The sound initial choice of response variables and the advisability of simpler analyses when feasible are discussed. (SLD)

Pugh, Richard C.; Hu, Yuehluen – Journal of Educational Research, 1991
Reviews the use and interpretation of canonical correlation analysis in 1978-89 "Journal of Educational Research" articles. Wide variation in the use of terminology was found across 10 articles reporting 11 studies. Because supplementary analyses are now available, researchers are encouraged to use the model more fully when interpreting…

Kaplan, David; Wenger, R. Neill – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1993
This article presents a didactic discussion on the role of asymptotically independent test statistics and separable hypotheses as they pertain to issues of specification error, power, and model misspecification in the covariance structure modeling framework. A small population study supports the major findings. (SLD)

Headrick, Todd C.; Sawilosky, Shlomo S. – Psychometrika, 1999
Proposes a procedure for generating multivariate nonnormal distributions. The procedure, an extension of the Fleishman power method (A. Fleishman, 1978), generates the average value of intercorrelations much closer to population parameters than competing procedures for skewed and heavy tailed distributions and small sample sizes. Reports Monte…

Simonsen, Gregory; Blazina, Chris; Watkins, C. Edward, Jr. – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 2000
Examines the relation of gender role conflict to certain aspects of gay men's psychological experience. Gay men with less gender role conflict had a more positive view of seeking psychological help and reported fewer symptoms of anger, anxiety, and depression. (Author/JDM)

Timm, Neil H. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1999
Investigates the equality of "p" correlated effect sizes for "k" independent studies in which treatment and control groups are compared using Hotelling's "T" statistic. Illustrates the procedure and discusses the importance of sample size. (SLD)

Gilleskie, Donna B.; Harrison, Amy L. – Economics of Education Review, 1998
Examines education's effects on choice of medical care inputs and the subsequent relationship between these inputs and overall health. Specifically examines consumption of curative and preventive medical care and other lifestyle choices, using nultivariate analysis of three estimation models and 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey data.…

Ma, Xin – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 2005
Using data from the Longitudinal Study of American Youth (LSAY), the present study examined whether early acceleration of students into formal algebra at the beginning of middle school promoted evident growth in different mathematical areas (basic skills, algebra, geometry, and quantitative literacy) and stable growth across these mathematical…

Maxwell, Scott E. – Psychological Methods, 2004
Underpowered studies persist in the psychological literature. This article examines reasons for their persistence and the effects on efforts to create a cumulative science. The "curse of multiplicities" plays a central role in the presentation. Most psychologists realize that testing multiple hypotheses in a single study affects the Type I error…

Marsh, Herbert W.; Parada, Roberto H.; Ayotte, Violane – Psychological Assessment, 2004
Relations between self-concept and mental health are best understood from a multidimensional perspective. For responses by 903 adolescents (mean age = 12.6) to a new French translation of the Self Description Questionnaire II (SDQII), confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated a well-defined multidimensional factor structure of reliable, highly…
