Peer reviewedTomic, Welko; And Others – Journal of Educational Research, 1993
Dutch researchers investigated the effects of Obuchova's method of teaching measurement to kindergarten children with no knowledge of conservation or seriation. Results indicated training was highly effective. Skills were transferred to conservation tasks not taught in training. Transfer to concepts not included in training was also observed. (SM)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Conservation (Concept), Foreign Countries, Kindergarten
Peer reviewedBaroody, Arthur J. – Learning and Instruction, 1993
Using R. S. Siegler's retrieval-required task, 19 male and 22 female third graders were examined before they had been introduced to multiplication in school. Examination of error patterns suggests that the basic assumptions of the distribution-of-associations model need to be tested directly and that the retrieval-required task confounds retrieved…
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students, Error Patterns
Peer reviewedCalvin, Scott – Physics Teacher, 1999
Features an assignment involving average monthly temperatures that can serve as an example of curve-fitting for a periodic function. (WRM)
Descriptors: Functions (Mathematics), Graphs, High Schools, Higher Education
Peer reviewedWard, Gilbert H. – Physics Teacher, 1999
Explains the strange effect a crosswind has on motion. (WRM)
Descriptors: Force, High Schools, Higher Education, Kinetics
Peer reviewedCanderle, Luis H. – Physics Teacher, 1999
Proposes that introductory physics courses extend the analysis of one-dimensional motion to a more sophisticated level. Gives four experimental setups and graphical analysis of the distance, velocity, and acceleration in the vertical and horizontal directions. (WRM)
Descriptors: Acceleration (Physics), Graphs, Higher Education, Kinetics
Peer reviewedWaycaster, Pansy – Inquiry, 1998
Based on an analysis of student success rates in developmental math courses and the results of a survey of math programs at other community colleges in Virginia, the math faculty at Southwest Virginia Community College increased the number of credit hours for developmental mathematics courses to allow students more time to master fundamental…
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Community Colleges, Credits, Curriculum Design
Peer reviewedGoldsworthy, Anne; Watson, Rod; Robinson, Valerie Wood – Education in Science, 1999
Suggests using everyday examples to help students describe the relationships that emerge from the evidence displayed on line graphs during science investigations. (WRM)
Descriptors: Elementary Secondary Education, Foreign Countries, Graphs, Mathematical Concepts
Peer reviewedTracy, Dyanne M. – School Science and Mathematics, 2000
Describes a lesson that provides an opportunity for students to obtain the equation for a line describing data they have collected, use the equation they have derived to set up an Egg Bungee Jump, and relate the numbers in the equation to the physical properties of the bungee jump. (WRM)
Descriptors: Hands on Science, Inquiry, Integrated Activities, Mathematical Concepts
Peer reviewedScavo, Thomas R.; Petraroja, Byron – Teaching Children Mathematics, 1998
Introduces a unit on data analysis which would not only satisfy elementary statistics requirements but also involve students in a long-term mathematics project in a meaningful and relevant way. Addresses the mathematical concepts of measurement, graphing, and computation. (ASK)
Descriptors: Computation, Data Analysis, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics
Peer reviewedSundberg, Sue E. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 1998
Presents an activity involving students in the creation of polyhedra which enables them to understand the characteristics and develop a clear definition of different polyhedra for themselves. This activity helps develop spatial ability by encouraging students to experiment with creating models of polyhedra while using a wide variety of polygons…
Descriptors: Geometric Concepts, Geometry, Intermediate Grades, Junior High Schools
Peer reviewedSpangler, David B. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 1998
Presents an activity on probability and area in which students try to decide which door to buy. (ASK)
Descriptors: Area, Geometric Concepts, Geometry, Intermediate Grades
Peer reviewedWilloughby, Stephen S. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 1997
Describes several activities and games that provide an introduction to the concept of function. Suggests that experiences should depend more on students' experiences and understanding and less on the memorization of unmotivated conventions with abstract symbols. Includes activities for a calculator as a function machine, composite functions, and…
Descriptors: Calculators, Educational Games, Functions (Mathematics), Graphs
Peer reviewedAnku, Sitsofe Enyonam – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 1997
Relates the personal story of how a 13-year-old used previous knowledge of matching words in English to construct her own understanding of mapping in mathematics as it pertains to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' (NCTM) recommendation that students use and value connections between mathematics and other disciplines. (AIM)
Descriptors: Functions (Mathematics), Integrated Activities, Interdisciplinary Approach, Junior High Schools
Peer reviewedMunisamy, Susila; Doraisamy, Logeswary – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1998
Discusses the performance of Malaysian secondary school students on a probability concepts test covering various intuitive and taught probability concepts. Describes the establishment of a probability concepts hierarchy and considers probability understanding in relation to independent variables. Boys, Form Six students, and students with a higher…
Descriptors: Cognitive Style, Comprehension, Concept Formation, Foreign Countries
Peer reviewedEvensky, Jerry; Kao, Duke; Yang, Qing; Fadele, Remi; Fenner, Richard – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1997
Describes a model for addressing prerequisite mathematics needs. A small set of prerequisite skills for the content course is identified and assessed, and students needing extra help are assisted. Targeted students include those with only marginal deficits rather than those needing full course remediation. Presents results from empirical testing…
