Friedman, Alinda – Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1978
Subjects compared pairs of nonconcrete and "nonimageable" words along a dimension which has no physical analog--the evaluative dimension of the semantic differential. Their reaction time to do so was an inverse logarithmic function of the difference between the numerical "goodness' values they had assigned to the words. (Author/RM)

A semantic differential instrument was devised to predict success of counselor-trainees in a practicum course. The instrument was not useful in predicting success. (Author/JKS)

Research on the semantic differential technique has provided evidence for variance in Osgood's formulation of dimensions of connotative meaning. Retest data based on Piotrowski's original sample is reported. Results indicate support for stability and consistency of the Evaluation dimension. Moderate consistency was found in scales comprising the…

Henion, Karl E. – J Soc Psychol, 1970
Exposing subjects to pleasant and unpleasant pictures and odors separately and simultaneously, evaluative meanings were compared and correlations were derived. Very modest support was obtained for extending consistency theory to a limited case of cross-modalities." (DB)

Examined whether problems of the same semantic cluster correlated with each other as problems that people experience. Semantically similar behaviors like "showing affection" and "revealing personal things" did covary as problems. (Author/BEF)

A total of 38 high school and 53 college students and 30 adults were asked to rate the words "youth,""adolescent,""teenager" and "adult" on 16 scales of semantic differential in an effort to test the hypotheses that attitudes towards adolescents are more favorable than commonly believed. (MS)
