Experiments were designed and carried out in an attempt to identify some parameters relating to ease of manual searching in library catalogs. A comparison of the difficulty of searching the same file in card form and book form indicated that searching the book catalog generally requires more time. (4 references) (Author/NH)

The complex and time-consuming task of preparing an acronym directory with fully documented entries for the library, information, and computer science fields was appropriately aided by methodology of these fields. The TSS (Topological Screens System) for substructure search was applied to the CAS Registry file making it searchable on-line. The TSS screens and the use of the screen indexes are described. The procedures used to produce the index to volume 20 (1969) of American Documentation are described to demonstrate a system for computer-assisted indexing and bibliographic production developed at the Columbia University School of Library Science. The Video PATSEARCH system consists of a microcomputer with a special keyboard and two display screens which accesses the PATSEARCH database of United States government patents on the Bibliographic Retrieval Services (BRS) search system.
