Clifton, Rodney; Perry, Raymond P. – History and Social Science Teacher, 1983
There is little use spending time and money implementing multicultural programs which have little or no effect. Discussed are two techniques, the sociometric test and the semantic differential, which can be used by teachers to evaluate the effectiveness of their efforts to reduce or perhaps eliminate prejudice and discrimination. Kammer, Phyllis Post – Counseling and Values, 1984
Used 12 bipolar adjectives to assess perceptions of 41 counseling students who rated themselves as counselors. Pretest and posttest ratings showed trainees' self-perceptions changed positively on evaluative, potency and activity dimensions during their initial skills training. The semantic differential technique was sensitive to changes in…

Osgood, Charles E.; And Others – Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 1976
In 1954 Osgood and Luria reported a blind analysis of a case of triple personality, popularly known as "The Three Faces of Eve," that had been analyzed by Thigpen and Cleckley. Here they combined with Robert Jeans to do a similar blind analysis of a case Jeans was treating in the late 1960s. (Editor/RK)

Monge, Rolf H. – Developmental Psychology, 1973
The connotative structure of self-concept was examined by factor analysis of a semantic differential instrument and found to be essentially constant through adolescence, more so for boys than for girls. (Author)

Miller, P. M'C.; Dale, R. R. – Educational Review, 1973
Using the Semantic Differential, 274 first-year university students rated four concepts concerning university, producing scores on evaluation', potency' and activity'. For comparision these concepts were each paired with a concept relating to school. (Author)

Smith, Raymond G.; Nichols, Harold J. – Journal of Communication, 1973
Results indicate that the troublesome scale/concept interaction which in past studies has lowered the internal validity of many investigations can be reduced by the simple expedient of controlling for homogeneity of domain of scales and concepts employed. (Authors)

Adams-Webber, J. – British Journal of Psychology, 1978
This research examines further the hypothesis that subjects tend to allot figures to the negative poles of constructs approximately 38 percent of the time. Sixty Canadian undergraduates judged 20 nonsense words as if these were the names of persons on 20 bipolar constructs. Results clearly supported the hypothesis. (Author)

Aronson, David W.; Graziano, Anthony M. – Gerontologist, 1976
Ten older adults were involved in a photography activity once a week for six weeks, while five older adults were controls. Using pre- and post-program semantic differentials, it was found that the photography activity was associated with significant increases in positive attitudes. (Author)

A cohort of nurses and midwives completed a Hoste Grid (semantic differential scale) before and after a course on management of care delivery. Precourse positive expectations were shaken but not destroyed by the experience. Ways to address student fears and improve the evaluation process were identified. (SK)

Polizzi, Kenneth G.; Millikin, Richard J. – Educational Gerontology, 2002
Results of the Aging Semantic Differential completed by 142 undergraduates showed significant attitude differences related to descriptions of "old,""elderly," and "ages 70-85." Attitudes were significantly more positive regarding the 70-85 category. Results suggest that using stereotypical language during the research process creates bias in…

Lawson, Edwin D.; And Others – 1984
The original nine programs for semantic differential analysis have been condensed into three programs which have been further refined and augmented. They yield: (1) means, standard deviations, and standard errors for each subscale on each concept; (2) Evaluation, Potency, and Activity (EPA) means, standard deviations, and standard errors; (3)…
