Hempowicz, Christine D. – ProQuest LLC, 2010
The purpose of this study was to investigate the transformational leadership characteristics of college and university presidents of private Title III and Title V-eligible institutions. Private institutions of higher education comprise approximately half of the total post-secondary institutions in the U.S. However, they are at greater risk for…

Steinacker, Ivo – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1974
An algorithm is proposed to solve the problem of sequential indexing which does not use any grammatical or semantic analysis, but follows the principle of emulating human judgement by evaluation of machine-recognizable attributes of structured word assemblies. (Author)

And Others; Hunt, Bernard L. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1975
At the Smithsonian Science Information Exchange, a computer system indexes word combinations in research summaries, according to a Classifying Dictionary, prior to review by the professional staff. (Author/PF)

Harter, Stephen P. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1975
Confirms previously published research in concluding that specialty words tend to possess frequency distributions which cannot be described by a single Poisson distribution. (Author/PF)

Janos, Jiri – Information Processing and Management, 1975
An experiment in computerized automated indexing of abstracts was conducted in Czechoslovakia. The computer indexing was then compared to manual indexing. (LS)

Artandi, Susan – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1976
The implications of some major linguistic and semiotic concepts for the machine manipulation of natural language text are examined. It is proposed that the study of meaning should contribute to the development of sophisticated algorithms for machine indexing. (Author)

Klingbiel, Paul H. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1973
To index at the Defense Documentation Center (DDC), an automated system must choose single words or phrases rapidly and economically. Automation of DDC's indexing has been machine-aided from its inception. A machine-aided indexing system is described that indexes one million words of text per hour of CPU time. Salton, G. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1972
A new testing process is described. The design of the test procedure is covered in detail, and the several language processing features incorporated into the SMART system are individually evaluated. (20 references) (Author)

Villen-Rueda, Luis; Senso, Jose A.; de Moya-Anegon, Felix – Journal of Academic Librarianship, 2007
The analysis of user searches in catalogs has been the topic of research for over four decades, involving numerous studies and diverse methodologies. The present study looks at how different types of users effect queries in the catalog of a university library. For this purpose, we analyzed log files to determine which was the most frequent type of…

Jacobs, Charles R. – 1972
Progress is reported at the 1,000,000 word level on the development of a partial syntatic analysis technique for indexing text. A new indexing subroutine for hyphens is provided. New grammars written and programmed for Machine Aided Indexing (MAI) are discussed. (ED 069 290 is a related document) (Author)

Vander Meulen, W. A.; Janssen, P. J. F. C. – Information Processing and Management, 1977
A comparative evaluation of results in terms of recall and precision from queries submitted to systems with automatic and manual subject indexing. Differences were attributed to query formulation. The effectiveness of automatic indexing was found equivalent to manual indexing. (Author/KP)

Gray, W. A. – Information Storage and Retrieval, 1971
The technique described enables an on line computer based information retrieval system to aid indexers by selecting possible indexing terms to be assigned to a new document entering the system. The economic aspect of implementing the technique in a working information retrieval system is considered. (16 references) (Author/MM)
